Polar scientists reveal dramatic new evidence of climate change<br>
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
Friday, 27 June 2008

It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.

The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic – and worrying – examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.

"From the viewpoint of science, the North Pole is just another point on the globe, but symbolically it is hugely important. There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water," said Mark Serreze of the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado.

If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above.

Seasoned polar scientists believe the chances of a totally icefreeNorth Pole this summer are greater than 50:50 because the normally thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced by hugeswathes of thinner ice formed over a single year.

Oh NO! What will happen to Santa's workshop??? Will the reindeer need swimming lessons? Will he replace the sleigh with a barge? Inquiring minds want to know!

It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.WADR to the screeching alarmists, human history goes back tens of thousands of years (or millions, if one is a Darwinist).

Q: What was the first recorded human presence at the NP?
A: Robert Peary in 1909.

At takes a mighty schitteload of assumin' to say that the polar ice melting would be the first time in hundreds of centuries. It's certainly arguable that it was gone when the Vikings farmed in Greenland during the medieval warm period.

It's just more Gorebot hyperbole. Will it ever stoip?

There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water Says who, asshole? You? and what if I say there's supposed to be open water at the North Pole, not ice?

I'm afraid it will never stoip.

So tired of the "fragile Earth" BS. It's so /yawn.

I remember this one shop in the middle of town. It was out of business and unused for several months, maybe a year, and in that short time period it was being overrun by weeds, grass, shrubs, etc. The wilderness was promptly reclaiming it (and this was in the middle of town in the business district).

I'm so tired of the Earth being portrayed as a helpless victim at the mercy of evil man, when in reality, man has been fighting, since the dawn of time, tooth and nail to survive, and to keep a nature at bay that's killed us ruthlessly without a hint of pity or remorse.

It's clear to me now that the dinosaurs went extinct because they were democrats who killed themselves off (http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/showthread.php?t=59311) trying to prevent mythical "dino-made Pangaea separation."

This is fantastic news! I can cruise to the North Pole this summer and dip slush right from the ocean for my marguiritas - I won't even need to add the salt!

Kewl!

I remember a news report from about 30 years ago or so that a nuclear submarine had surfaced at the North Pole. There was virtually no ice there at the time.

The USS Skate (SSN-578) surfaced at the North Pole in 1958. Alas, no Santa, workshop or elves.

Would this (http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/showthread.php?t=60846) explain why there may be no ice at North Pole this summer?

More on the Northwest Passage (http://tomnelson.blogspot.com/2008/04/more-on-northwest-passage.html)

EXCERPT:

Here (http://www.john-daly.com/press/press-00b.htm#northwest) (dated Sept 9, 2000): A few weeks ago during the height of the Arctic summer, when the sun shines 24 hours a day, a Canadian police vessel navigated the fabled `Northwest Passage'. The media greeted this news as if it were somehow unique (global warming etc.).

However, the Northwest Passage has a long history and these are but a few of the passages made during the 20th century. (Information obtained from here (http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/north/nor-ii/franklin/fran051e.htm)) -

1903-06 - Roald Amundsen, in the Gjoa, makes the first full transit of the Northwest Passage from east to west.

1944 - The St. Roch, an RCMP schooner, makes the first west-to-east passage. It returns west and becomes the first to make the return journey in one season .

1969 - The Manhattan, the largest ship to navigate the Northwest Passage, leads a special experiment to see if the transport of bulk oil from Alaska would be feasible through the Passage.

Actually it is melting slower than last year.

This is another bullshit crap we have to put up with.

The Northwest Passage doesn't go over the North Pole.

Yes, and it takes very thin ice for a submarine to surface through the ice. The Skate isn't the only US Submarine which has surfaced in this area.
