Some military accidents since 1998:
- Dec. 11, 2000: A Marine MV-22 tiltrotor Osprey crashes in a heavily wooded area near Jacksonville, N.C., killing four Marines.
- July 25, 2000: Defense Secretary William Cohen tells the Senate Armed Services Committee two consecutive failures to shoot down a mock warhead in space with a land-based interceptor have raised doubts about the possibility of a workable national missile defense by 2005, the original target date.
- April 8, 2000: A Marine MV-22 tiltrotor Osprey crashes at the Marana Northwest Regional Airport near Tucson, Ariz., during a training exercise, killing 19 Marines aboard.
- Dec. 10, 1999: A C-130 cargo plane carrying 86 military passengers in Kuwait crashes, killing three and injuring seven. An Air Force investigation board blames pilot and crew error.
-May 7, 1999: U.S. planes flying a NATO mission over Belgrade mistakenly bomb the Chinese Embassy. Three are killed and twenty injured. A bad map is later blamed.
-April 14, 1999: A U.S. pilot flying a NATO mission over Yugoslavia mistakenly bombs an Albanian refugee convoy under Serb escort. No official death toll can be determined; Yugoslav authorities claim as many as 75 killed and dozens injured.
- April 10, 1999: Two Marine jets drop bombs on a lookout post at the Vieques training ground in Puerto Rico. One civilian is killed. Four others are injured, including three civilians.
- Feb. 3, 1998: A Marine EA-6B Prowler severs a cable holding a gondola on a ski lift in northern Italy. The 20 people inside are killed.
