Too old to work?
W.Va. seniors face battle landing jobs

Think finding a job is hard? Try being over 55 with no high school diploma and limited transportation options in a mostly rural state whose main industries demand good physical agility.
Add the possibility of age discrimination and that's the challenge facing about a third of the estimated 260,000 senior citizens in West Virginia who can't afford to retire, says Janie White, grants management specialist for Preston County Senior Citizens Inc., which serves Boone, Clay, Doddridge, Harrison, Kanawha, Monongalia, Preston and Taylor counties.
To help more struggling seniors find gainful employment, the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services has developed a four-year plan for the Senior Community Service Employment Program.

The ones that get me are the people who could retire but they don't. There are people I have worked with in the past who would get a great retirement and have homes that are paid for, but they keep working. There are people with families who need the job opportunities. And even worse are the people who have accumulated a massive amount of earned sick leave and can be off months for something like heart surgery and they STILL won't retire and everyone else has to do their job to pick up the slack. I don't get it. I would rather take time to enjoy life for a while before I get to the point where I can't get around to do anything.

Not all West Virginia seniors are retired or unemployed.

That's not really much of an issue here, some could stay in Mexico and live better so why go to WV:huh:. We just need to get rid of the Democrats. Can we get them deported?

Who mentioned force? I just said I don't know why they don't retire when they could and live well. It seems selfish when there are people who need the work, sometimes even filling job slots while they are out on sick leave for very extended periods but could retire and still have the same health insurance, sometimes BETTER insurance when they retire. They are free to do it. I just don't understand why they would.

For some they stay working because it's all they've ever known. They may not know what to do with themselves for hours on end. They may not have many friends, or their friends have all either moved away or are dead. When my grandmother retired, she almost went nuts trying to find things to do...she said the first couple months were great and then she just got bored and got a part time job to get out of the house and meet people.

Suze, it's like LDGirl says, some of those folks have never known anything BUT work, and if they're barely literate, they're not likely to enjoy their spare time reading anything, and there's only so much trash one can endure on reality TV. It's not a matter of being selfish. In a better world - that is, a world without Democrats - it wouldn't be a zero-sum game. Grandpa is working? Hey, great! So is Grandson III and his brothers and sisters, and NONE of them are collecting welfare like most of the residents of West Virginia (or New Orleans, LA, South Central, CA, Trailor Town and Housing Project, Anystate, etc.)
Suzie

The people I am talking about are literate. They have pretty good jobs working for the State. They could travel or spend time with grandchildren ... anything. I have seen some of them that are so sick that they keep positions tied up even though they can't return to the job and they can't hire anyone else to do the job while someone still holds that pay slot. The State is one of the largest employers here and you get lots of sick leave. They just keep that job title and everyone else has to do their work. Some have even died still on the payroll even after their sick leave runs out. I just don't understand why, it's not benefiting them, it's hurting their coworkers and they could be doing anything else without worrying about work.

Maybe some people actually LIKE their jobs and don't want to retire?
Also, it's been shown that people who continue working tend to live longer. Retirement for many (but by no means all) is the beginning of a downward path....

With some of them their attitude doesn't seem to reflect a great love for what they are doing. Unless they just love roaming the building irritating people. One guy I knew used to say his wife didn't want him home with her all day, and it was very obvious why.

Nothing is so terrible to a person as the realization that he is no longer needed.
Suzie
07-07-2008, 01:24 PM
Well now that would be where it seems selfish. The great majority of these folks I am talking about have families, they can make them feel useful. I have known a couple that don't even really do their work anymore, they can't assign them anything because they never get it done, and when they tried to get them to pick up the pace they file a grievance saying they are being picked on because they are old. I have known about a dozen or so of these people from both my husband and my employment. I would say maybe 5 would fit the description of someone who loves what they are doing and probably don't want to stop doing it. The rest just want some place to come hang out during the day and don't accomplish much of anything while they are there. Of course that description fits a great many state government employees no matter how old they are.

 Well, it's not a better world, & it is a zero-sum game. Suzie's right. If a person's able to retire, but stays on the payroll calling in sick, it's selfish, & it takes away a job from an able-bodied person who needs it. If you were an able-bodied person desperately looking for work, & I've been in that situation before, you'd see it Suzie's way.

I took an early retirement offer from my employer - an offer I couldn't refuse - but I wasn't ready to stop working. However, I didn't want to work full-time, so I worked part-time as a tax preparer for 10 years before I retired full-time.

My grandfather was forced to retire from his city job when he was 71. He then got a job as a doorman at a Manhattan athletic club where he worked until he was 80.
My father like Tex had to take an early retirement but the same company wanted him as a a consultant and he has been doing that for over 10 years and he is now 73. Working a long time seems to be inherent in my family.

Ever think that some people enjoy working Susie? I know too many men who finally retire and die within a few months.
And those people who need jobs can find one if they really want to. We are hiring over 25,000 people here locally for several refinery expansions and can't find enough of them.
And I get around better than most 25 year olds that I am forced to hire nowdays. Sad but true. You can enjoy life while you are still working if you enjoy life in the first place. So don't come off with that victim mentality because I don't give a damn if some slackard can't get work because I don't retire. If they wanted a job bad enough they could certainly find one.:flame:

I am sure it depends on where you live as to whether there are plenty of jobs for younger workers. And if they are actually working that would be nice too, some are just looking to socialize or keeping a place holder from a sick bed. I guess I would just rather be with my family. I can't wait till my husband is done with the rat race and all the traveling around so we can do things together whenever we want, and neither can he. I don't understand why anyone wants the hassle if they don't have to do it. But whatever floats your boat.

I don't want to disagree with my good buddy Sooz, but I'm with Taz on this one. I could retire any time, but I keep on keepin' on because I enjoy what I do. I think I'm good at it and besides, where I am is so remote that almost no one even wants to go there, much less work there.
Even were that not so, I'd still be at it somewhere. I've worked for 44 years and intend to be working when the Old Man calls my number.

Do you really need it spelled out?
That smiley assures us that the one posting is saying his/her say in a friendly way rather than a nasty way. That's not always easy to know when all you have to go on is words on the screen.
If Sooz tells me I'm nuts without the smiley, I'm likely to take offense. When she puts in the smiley I know she just doesn't agree but it's no big deal.

A young man would think that. An older man knows the truth of the statement: "When the lights go out they're pretty-much the same."
A woman's sexiness is all in your head.

Give me enough money to live comfortably w/o working and I'll retire so fast your head will spin.
I am sick to death of taking orders from ninnies and cretins young enough to be my children, who all seem to have majored in "Happy Talk," and now pester me with stupid rules and regulations about what I may and may not say at work, lest I should "offfend someone." True, they're only marginally successful at making me shut up, but still, they're a boil in the bleep.

If I need to work to justify my existence, I'll volunteer my time, preferably to an organization whose mission is to stifle liberals.

I think the one where Hitler got beheaded is a new one in Berlin.
There is an organization that has been known to be pretty good at "permanently stifling" individuals: La Cosa Nostra (http://www.geocities.com/capitolhill/lobby/9880/index2.html).
Not that I would recommend joining that organization, or do so myself, understand.
