The local paper did a story down here much like this one about public employees who make over $100,000 a year. They listed the names, the base, and the OT of each one. I made the list due to OT and as a result received about 20 phone calls from people calling me every name in the book.

I didn't ask for the OT, the city used OT instead of replacing people who retired or left. It saved them money in the long run but the scumbag reporter failed to mention this even though it was relayed to her by 5 different cities.

I worked for that money. I was putting in 72 hour work weeks and this paper made it out like we were the bad guys.

72-hour weeks are no fun. That's like being in the Army during those 3-week-long FTX's that seem to go on forever. You get all bleary eyed and worn down and it takes a week just to get rested up.

Thats messed up. You guys working in the hood having your food being stolen and being cursed out going into a house where someone is about to die should be making 250,000 or more a year. I think all first responders and military should make very good money, due to them having an extremely important job in the community that only certain people could do.

Taylor I make very good money and have no complaints about my pay. I knew I would never get rich doing this job when I was hired. On the other hand I knew I would have better job security and benefits than most.

One of the problems we now have is hiring 21 year old kids at 47,000 starting pay. They have no idea how good they have it and how hard it is outside the fire service to start a job at that pay with only an AS degree. When another local department gets a raise they feel they are owed the same thing.

I know you weren't complaining about your pay. If I'm ever in charge of an area of the U.S. via elected position and I can do something about pay for first responders and all them, I'd boost it no problem hands down as long as it would be suitable and within the limits of the local treasury. Well I can understand how that works out with the kids there. I see how it all works, it needs to all be "fair" I HATE FAIR!

Is that like being deployed to the Persian Gulf for 6-7 months at a time with 20 hours on, 4 hours off, no overtime, and not counting watches?

It's like being in Iraq for 72 hours at a time. I_C told me he went into a house to someone with a heart attack and ended up getting shot at now I don't think it was an AK and RPG's but... it's still dangerous as hell in the hood sleazeball community.
