Dogmeat off menus for Olympics

Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics.

Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.

A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled.

What people do to animals in other countries, but especially in the Third World (and I include China and other past and present communist countries in that designation) would probably curl your hair.

As long as they let people know what it is and they can choose to eat it or not I don't see why they would change it just for the olympics. If they do it all the time what difference will not selling to Olympians or Olympic guests make?

If the non pork eating peoples of the world came here for the Olympics, they shouldn't expect us to stop serving it.

Abuse of the dogs of course is another issue all together. I don't like to see animals abused even if they are standard livestock. You can slaughter for food without abuse no matter what the animal is. But of course here dogs are members of the family, but that's not how they live over there.
