If it quacks like a duck

If I were to come into your home uninvited, rummage through your things, take your ID and use it to get a job, credit and access to things only a social security number could give me like a drivers license would you call the police? Would you call me a criminal? If I used that valuable piece of ID, for years and worked hard and raised a family and even paid my taxes would you still think I was bad? Would you want me sentenced to at the maximum 15 years for stealing your ID or would you feel sorry for me because I was after all just using it to better my life?
Compassion means to sympathize, to share in suffering or grief, no where in any dictionary have I found the words pretend it never happened or better yet reward. The word compassion has been thrown around a bunch here of late and to be honest it has made sure like a lot of words that you need a dictionary with you at all times just so that you can correct those people who do not know what the correct definition is. You see today’s compassion extends only to the person who commits the crime not to the victim. You see it every single day in the news papers when they report on a crime we must know why they did it, we must know how abused they were, what drugs most likely caused this, and very little if any information about the victim is given save their name age and how they were killed.
If per chance the jury is not feeling very compassionate on the day they are sentenced you can be sure that there will be some of the most compassionate people in the world trying to either get the criminal a new trail, or make sure he is not executed. You would never see any of these compassionate people mourning the death of the victim, why if they had just not been in that place at that time their poor criminal wouldn’t be in prison. I know I sound sarcastic but let’s be honest here shall we, this is where we are at, like it or not you know it is true so face the facts. Everyone must be compassionate, everyone must forgive the sinner, they must believe with their whole hearts that they are really a good person who just made a mistake and if you do not you are a cold hearted racist, bigot or anything else you wish to call it.
We hear but your Christian you must forgive the sinner, we can forgive them it does not mean that we do not punish them. If you have kids you know exactly what I am talking about. If junior breaks a window, we don’t rush to him and say you poor thing what did that window do to you? We might ask how it happened, we might ask why it happened and we might even take some of that into consideration as we punish them, but just allow them to walk away with no repercussions? Maybe even buy them an ice cream? If you do then you might want to replace every window you have with unbreakable glass. So there we have it, a picture of what our world has become today, where compassion is saved for those who commit the crime, after all the victim is dead what more can you do for them? We instead in an all out effort to understand have decided that no one is really a criminal.
So have you decided yet? Would you turn me in? Destroy my perfect life I was only borrowing from you? Crime is crime, criminals are criminals, and the prisons are full of people who only wanted to make their lives better. Would I be considered a criminal, or a poor hard working person who deserved the chance to have it all, have the slate wiped clean? If it quacks like a duck…
