WASHINGTON - Senator Orrin Hatch, the conservative Utah Republican, has written hundreds of songs on patriotic themes - with such titles as "Freedom's Light" and "I Love Old Glory" - as a way of paying tribute to his country.

But his latest trip down Tin Pan Alley had an even more personal resonance: Hatch said he was asked by several colleagues to put down his feelings about a very close friend who is facing a serious illness. The friend is the legendary liberal Ted Kennedy, and the colleagues are Democrats who envision having the song played as a tribute to Kennedy at next month's Democratic convention - and as a living example of a brotherhood that transcends party lines.

The result, "Headed Home," is a lilting ballad that even its author can't repeat without tearing up. The lyrics, he said, refer to Kennedy's heroic return to the Senate where Kennedy has served for almost 46 years and Hatch for 32.

Sailing home, sailing home. America, America, we're headed home at last

I'd like to hear someone sing this song to Teddy K.:

"Oh say, has anybody seen my Sweet Gypsy Rose
Here's her picture when she was my sweet Mary Jo
Now she's got rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
Say has anybody seen my Sweet Gypsy Rose?"

It was the third of June, another dusty drunken Kennedy day
I was out choppin' cotton and ole Ted just a-snorin' away.
And at dinner time I stopped and walked back to the house to eat
and walked around his big ole fat ass, suckin' on his own encrusted teat.
Then mama said she got some news from Choctaw Ridge
Said, "Teddy kilt that Mary Jo below the Tallahassee Bridge."

I said, "Now that's some news. Teddy, ain't you got a thing to say?"
And Teddy, he just nodded, said they hadn't pulled the car away.
He was out all night looking for someone to call
but everybody else was drunk as him, they couldn't stand because they'd just fall.
I said, "But did you bang her, Ted, before you drowned her down in the bog?"
And Teddy, he just smiled and said, "I think I'll have some hair of the dog."

My eyes are misting up as I read of this grand display of courage by our dear “conservative” Senator as he pays tribute to the life of one of our Nations true heroes. I can envision it now, as our fresh faced school children gather together each morning to join in the exaltation of one of the greatest men to ever grace the face of the earth, Ted Kennedy. I for one, have made it my personal goal to lobby Congress that “Headed Home” be made the new National Anthem and that we replace our Nations motto to “In Ted We Trust“, it is the very least we can do for this, our national savior. I will also ask the National Republican Party to adopt the attached photo as the parties official logo to display our deep desire for true unity.
Please take a moment and join with me as we strike up the chorus of “Headed Home” and encourage our esteemed friend to go ahead and go home. Maybe Mr. Hatch and the other fine upstanding members of the Republican caucus will join him in his journey.

I remain a staunch Opponent of term limits for Congress..

But when I read pap like this ~

I will admit that my position is sorely weakened.

Mary Jo Kopechne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Jo_Kopechne) went for a one-way ride with Ted.

Oh brother, let's pay tribute to a drunk! He should have been gone long ago. I'm with Elgalad on term limits.

 This is what I was talking about when I responded to Maggie_T's question of why Tony Snow, & not Ted Kennedy. I can't blame God for procrastinating on the obsequious, insincere eulogies that we'll all soon have to endure. Although, I might have to modify that to "sometimes insincere". Given that Orrin Hatch was among those to rubber-stamp Clinton's Supreme Court picks, he probably feels that Kennedy deserves some sort of reward for his years of public disservice. As far as I'm concerned, Kennedy should get a good, swift kick in the ass for all the harm he's brought to these United States, especially in helping to keep abortion legal. And that's nothing compared to what awaits him on the other side of death, if he's not right with God when his time comes.

 The only thing good I can say about Kennedy is that for the past 39 years, liberals had no right to take the moral high ground in the wake of any Republican scandal as long as ol' drunk-murderer Teddy was in office, & I was always quick to throw that in their faces. At the now-defunct Talk Amarillo forum, some liberaloon tried to make hay out of the Mark Foley scandal, & when I reminded him about the murderer that demonic rats kept sending back to the Senate, he replied that I should stick to issues that were more current. I told him that the last I checked, Kennedy was still in office, so it's still current.

Excellent observation, LP.

And Bre'er Fox, forget about having to clean my keyboard. I only wet my pants laughing, so the computer is okay.

I know, hon. I understood. If I were God, I'd also postpone the "pleasure" of having that fat drunk in my presence. I'm sure even the Lord would need a barf bag in such cases.

OMG, yes. When you mention Ted Kenney, liberals always caterwaul about how it all happened a long time ago. My usual reply is funny how they never apply their "statute of limitations" when it comes to conservatives. Any conservative "scandal" is permanently present in liberals' memories, whether it happend years ago or just yesterday.

I hate liberals. Did I ever mention how much I hate liberals? Because I REALLY hate the bastards.

Methinks Maggie dislikes liberals.

After Ted dies, he's not likely to be anywhere near God, if you know what I mean.

BTW, Fox, honey. My barfing smiley was meant for Hatch's endearing little performance of humping Teddy's leg, not your poetic skills. ;)

Teddy, don't you know
We all would like to know,
What happened with you
And little Mary Jo?

You drove across the bridge,
Didn't make it to the other side,
You thought it was a water slide?
Then you ran away to hide.

Said you needed to talk to someone,
Your lawyer, maybe? So you say.
Perhaps you poured yourself a cold one,
Waited for the break of day.

So, Ted, you've served your country,
Brought billions of bucks into Back Bay.
But a little pond at Chappaquiddick
Is what we all remember today.
