The Democratic party in action
Editorial
The Wall Street Journal
July 17, 2008
New York City has long been the highest tax jurisdiction in the United States, but California politicians are proposing to steal that brass tiara. California faces a $15 billion budget deficit and Democrats who rule the state Legislature have proposed closing the gap with a $9.7 billion tax hike on business and "the rich." There's a movie that describes this idea: Clueless.More (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121625150189660215.html)

Still think I've got you beat. I live in Sweden - finally officially declared (by EU tax analysts) to have the highest taxes in Europe - on everything. We're not just talkin' income tax here - sales tax (even on food) - everything, and with the highest fees as well. You might not understand that last part until to realize that socialism runs like an insurance program - except you have no choice of provider. You pay taxes for services, but then like insurance coverage, you have co-payments. Sweden has the highest taxes and the highest co-payments - on everything. Add to that the old-fashioned cartel driven system in the capitalism part of Sweden's "third way" and you can quickly figure out why most of the population lives in small apartments rather than houses.

And you stay in Sweden because?

And you stay in Sweden because?
I'm well aware of the fact that I am not forced to stay here, which is one of the reasons that I rarely complain about Sweden - publically or privately. I'm just stating a matter of fact - in the context that this is relatively new information - not IMO that Sweden has high taxes, but denials about tax rates no longer work because of the recent - for the first time ever - official EU tax review; and of course in the context of a discussion on who has the highest taxes. It's a matter of record and a fact that has already been reported publically. You can state it as a matter of officially established fact now if you wish - not just that Sweden has high taxes, but that they have the highest taxes in Europe.

Blimey, Mexifornia defeated Maine, in being #1 in taxes. Maine used to have that "honor." Aw, Maine liberals must be so disappointed.

The democratic legislature wants to raise the state income tax to 12% and sales taxes to 9.5%.

There is an obvious result from jacking higher taxes on businesses.
a. Those businesses who are able will leave for lower tax states, meaning less jobs in California.
b. Those businesses who are able will avoid relocating to California, meaning less jobs in California.
c. More out of work individuals and growing number of illegal aliens will further financially burden the state.
d. Several years in the future, California will be financial strapped again, so California government will raise taxes on businesses again.
e. Repeat items a through d above multiple times, until the lights go out in California

The "lights" have gone out in Californians a long time ago.

Point taken, Sister Maggie.
A State, or a nation, can't tax itself to greatness. California isn't taxing itself to greatness.... it's taxing itself into insolventcy.
I make the prediction now. A couple years from now, California government will "once again" find itself running out of money. Their only solution is going to have to be cutting expenditures. There is no bottomless pit of money to be had, taxing individuals and businesses. It takes time, but those higher income individuals and businesses being soaked will leave. Hence, no more rich folk "living here in California" to tax and soak.
Only a Socialist idiot believes people will stay in place and tolerate taxes being raised upon them again, and again, and again. There does come a breaking point where those individuals will take action to remove themselves and their investments from a high tax district.
That is precisely why states that have low or no taxes have businesses moving into those states. It is also why states with high taxes have businesses leaving.

Give it time, Maggie, Maine will rectify the problem and initiate ANOTHER tax hike to vault back into first. Remember, 2nd place is really "first loser" ya know.

Exactly. Well, I guess all California will have left to tax is Hollywood Royalty.
It will be amusing watching those pampered liberal schmucks putting their money where their big mouth is, for once ... ya think?
