WASHINGTON (http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/07/17/america/pelosi.php#): Upon entering Congress in 1987, Representative Nancy Pelosi quickly became part of the solid California front against oil drilling along much of the nation's coast.

The 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and the steady push to tap the potential reserves off the state's rugged coast had galvanized Californians and made opposition to offshore drilling part of the political DNA of up-and-coming figures like Pelosi.

She repeatedly resisted oil drilling in marine sanctuaries off the state's coast near her San Francisco district and, after joining the Appropriations Committee, was an advocate of reinstating the coastal drilling ban through spending restrictions each year.

"We learned the hard way that oil and water do not mix on our coast," Pelosi told a key committee in 1996 as she made her case for keeping the ban in place before a Congress then controlled by Republicans.

Now, with gas prices soaring, those drilling restrictions are facing their most severe test in years as calls intensify to more aggressively pursue domestic oil. Yet despite increasing pressure from President George W. Bush, a full-bore assault by congressional Republicans and some anxiety among her own rank-and-file Democrats, Pelosi is not budging.

Many of the DNC voters are supposed to be "the poor". They of all people can least afford higher gasoline prices. It means higher gasoline prices if they have automobiles, and it means higher bus, cab and train ticket prices if they use urban transport.

This issue is made to order for the Republicans. If I were the planner at the RNC, I'd spend millions hammering this message into the DNC voter's thick skulls.

If the RNC can't win an election with this one issue, they may as well close up shop. This wouldn't even be a tough election issue to hammer home.

Ok. I have a naive question. Why are demunists doing this? I mean, people are getting more and more pissed off at high gas prices. Even some democrats are starting to find it not funny. More and more people are seeing that it's only demunists who are against drilling.

In short, this is not helping demunists. Someone told me dems are going to wait till elections are over to do something. Aren't they risking too much? Could this be their undoing, especially when summer ends and temperatures starts going down and people start being cold?

I'm confused. Can someone enlighten me? Anyone?

Ok. I have a naive question. Why are demunists doing this? I mean, people are getting more and more pissed off at high gas prices. Even some democrats are starting to find it not funny. More and more people are seeing that it's only demunists who are against drilling.

In short, this is not helping demunists. Someone told me dems are going to wait till elections are over to do something. Aren't they risking too much? Could this be their undoing, especially when summer ends and temperatures starts going down and people start being cold?

Mags, they think they have this wrapped up in November and they can't afford to let prices drop before that or Bush will get the credit. democrats don't give a rats ass about America or its citizens, they only care about total and complete control of the process. Until there is another loser democrat in the white house, a 20 seat majority in congress, and a liberal SCOTUS, they will not allow anything positive to happen in this country.
