Idea of gas-tax holiday runs into a dead end

Talk now is to raise tax a dime a gallon to fund road improvements

WASHINGTON - The political vision of a summer gas tax holiday died a quick death in Congress, losing to a view that federal excise taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel will have to go up if they go anywhere.Despite calls from the presidential campaign trail for a Memorial Day-to-Labor Day tax freeze, lawmakers quickly concluded — with a prod from the construction industry — that having $9 billion less to spend on highways could create a pre-election specter of thousands of lost jobs.
Now, lawmakers quietly are talking about raising fuel taxes by a dime from the current 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.3 cents on diesel fuel.

Breathes there a CommuRAT whose sole purpose in life is not to f**k the taxpayers in every possible way?

I hope they jack it up by a buck a gallon. When the elections roll around and the nation's drivers are paying $5-$6 per gallon because of libeRATs, the GOP will have to strive mightily to lose (although they are talented that way).

Although having three threads going about how Congress is planning to screw us may be what is needed to get the lurkers who drift in here from time to time to see what's happening and actually get angry and try to do something.

Go ahead, Libs, raise gas taxes right before an election. You will be filling Pelosi's promise of change. Hopefully the voters will see you all for what you really are.....farking scumbags!!:flame:

No matter who wins the House, Senate or Presidency, the Left's whining will be the same.

" It's Bush's fault "

They'll be using him as an excuse eight years from now.

Maggie_T

Eight years? It will be their excuse for eternity. And the average idiot will nod his melon (the term 'head' does not apply) in agreement and blab "Yes, yes, it's all Bush's fault." And then, he'll reach for the remote control, so he can tune in to more important stuff. Like American Idol, or Survivor, or Oprah.

To democrtats yes, raise the gas tax. The goal of democrats is not to make the average person's life better by letting them keep more of what they work for. The goal is to control the average person. Gasoline should cost so much that we're not driving as much, turn down the thermostat, use less, make a smaller carbon footprint. That's the goal so of course they'll raise the gas tax and if it doesn't work, raise it again.

I think Kathy is pretty correct. Some might actively strive for it. Others are ultimately just indifferent about it. Personally, if I was bothered about changing prices, my consumption habits would probably change. They have a little already.

Because democreeps continue to promise them everything. And unfortunately for the country, the average Joe has become too stupid and too lazy to fend for himself. He bought into the Nanny Government fantasy and now wants everything for nothing. He's "entitled," you see.

As have mine, 83, but for some, that's not an option. The self-employed who rely on their pick-ups everyday for their jobs, big rigs who deliver our goods, police and fire departments who have to be on the ready or on patrol. The list is endless.

I know alot of people point the finger at America for consumption but how we forget that India and China are growing faster than we are, buying more and tapping into more reserves.

I suppose that self-righteous Julian over at your house (Fundies) thinks differently, eh?

...lawmakers quickly concluded — with a prod from the construction industry — that having $9 billion less to spend on highways could create a pre-election specter of thousands of lost jobs...Compare those lost jobs to the reaction of millions of American voters when they see the Dems actually RAISING the cost of the gasoline that is already strangling America...

That's just the kind of raw stupidity that Democrats use as logic in their twisted skulls... I'm with Doc - I hope they raise it a dollar a gallon and the quicker they do it, the better...

Sadly, I fear the Pubs, instead of using this issue to BE the opposition party, will hop on the "me too" bandwagon... That's about all they are up to today...

Yes, I know a lot of workers can't trade in their trucks for bikes, but a lot of the burden of higher fuel prices is passed on to their customers. Businesses do what they must to stay in business.

I know alot of people point the finger at America for consumption but how we forget that India and China are growing faster than we are, buying more and tapping into more reserves.

Yeah, pointing the finger doesn't make much sense. It's like blaming a kid raised on a McDonald's diet for being fat. The opportunity for the U.S. to grow was there, and like any other rational people, we took it. But with the "Rise of the Rest," our opportunities change. It won't matter who occupies the White House and Congress when it comes to the growth of other nations; China and India will continue to grow way faster than the U.S., and at first, the new circumstances will seem unfair. But over time, even people with the loudest complaints seem to adapt.

A question for the "alternative energy" wackos: which of these two is more environmentally benign? Is it one nuke on a hundred acres or so?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/DocDoom777/Energy-Eco/Nuke.jpg

Or is it tens of thousands of these strewn over many square miles?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/DocDoom777/Energy-Eco/AltPass2.jpg

In the year 2004, wind energy in California produced 4,258 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, about 1.5 percent of the state's total electricity. That's more than enough to light a city the size of San Francisco.Overview of Wind Energy in California (http://www.energy.ca.gov/wind/overview.html)

Run the numbers: 4,258 million kilowatt-hours divided by 8,760 hours/year = 0.486 million KW average power. Therefore in 2004 all the windmills in California generated about half the power of one 1000-MW nuke. So is it worth dotting the landscape with over 13,000 noisy, ugly windmills to avoid building one nuke?

The article also, probably inadvertently, demonstrates why wind cannot possibly be used for base-load generation.

Utility-scale wind farms are generally located in areas with average annual wind speeds of at least 13 miles per hour. Wind power is more available during certain seasons because climatic conditions affect wind speed. In California, wind speeds are highest in the hot summer months, and approximately three-fourths of all annual wind power output is produced during the spring and summer. Can the US rely for its base-load needs on a source where three-fourths of the annual total is generated in spring and summer?

I'm in favor of exploiting all sources of electrical energy, but any imbecile who thinks that oil and coal can be rendered obsolete in the next several decades also believes in the Tooth Fairy.

And don't even mention solar.

High prices lead to less gas being used , leading to less fuel tax money , putting less money in the Highway Trust Fund ..

The trust fund went from 10 million surplus in 2005 to a 3 million dollar def in 2009 ...

Not a single Democrat would come on Fox News to discuss their plans ...

Any single person mumbling about gas prices and still voting for any of those fat cat socialist democrats ought to be run out of this country to Europe ...
