They were, of course. From my unnamed authorities ...
One fine morning about three billion years ago, there was a flash of light in the west that quickly resolved into a large, silvery, disk-shaped object. It settled softly to the dead ground, and two small, grayish creatures from the Arcturian Planetary Survey Team emerged for a piss break. As Xorph selected a proper place for his greenish stream, his big googly eyes spotted a gleam in the sunlight. His wee willy still dribbling, he rushed over and brushed the dust off of the grandmother of all diamonds.
"Mothergrilxer!" he shouted ecstacilly. "Look at the size of this son of a trelgg. Holy garff! When Blinzela sees this, I'll get blowjobs for a year." The thought instantly aroused him, but inasmuch as the discharge would cause indelible and guffaw-inducing stains in the saucer's carpeting, he proceeded to address the matter where he stood.
The seed hit the soil, found it nourishing, and rapidly began to multiply. And thus was life introduced to a once barren Earth. And it was all because of a diamond.
Well, actually, it was later discovered to be a cubic zirconium, and Blinzela told Xorph where he could put his gift, but that's another tale. Needless to say, he never got the BJs.

I have been called a diamond in the rough. I think that probably means I am a lump of coal.

There, there, Sooz, we think of you as a very special nugget of graphite.

This proves what GK Chesterton said:
"When people stop believing in God, they don’t believe in nothing — they believe in anything."

Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are.
Like a diamond in the sky,
Up above the world so high.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are.

Somewhere in the years gone by, someone suggested to me the above poem was actually about a UFO; but I never bothered to find out any more details.
