quote:
CAMP BONDSTEEL, Kosovo (Army News Service, April 9, 2001) - A U.S. soldier shot and wounded an Albanian suspected of smuggling April 6 in Vitina, Kosovo.
Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment entered Sam's Pizzeria in Vitina, during a routine patrol Friday evening. The soldiers spotted the Albanian male, whom they said was a suspected extremist, and asked him to step outside for questioning. While exiting, the man pushed a U.S. soldier and fled on foot.
Members of the patrol asked the suspect to halt and he refused, so the soldiers began pursuit. While running, the man reached into his pants and pulled out what could have been a weapon, authorities said. With the object in his hand, he turned toward the soldiers. A soldier responded to this action by shooting the man once in the left shoulder.
The soldiers shouted at the man to halt again but he refused and entered a nearby building. U.S. soldiers cordoned off the area and then entered the building, detaining the man.
No Kosovo Force soldiers were injured.
"The soldier in Vitina responded with the appropriate force necessary for this situation," said Col. Tom Gross, Multinational Brigade East chief of staff. "The Albanian man is involved with smuggling and extremist activities and is known to be armed. Our soldiers were threatened and took appropriate actions to defend themselves."
KFOR soldiers transported the injured man to Camp Bondsteel for medical treatment of the gunshot wound. He is currently listed in stable condition.
The man will remain detained at Camp Bondsteel for questioning, officials said, after he receives medical treatment.

I guess that pretty much sends a good message.
