Bush Makes It Clear: He Would Defend Taiwan
(CNSNews.com) - No fudging from President Bush: In an ABC News interview taped on Tuesday, he said the United States would do "whatever it took" to help Taiwan defend itself. Asked if the U.S. had an obligation to defend Taiwan against an attack by China, Bush responded, "Yes, we do...and the Chinese must understand that. Yes, I would." He made the comments on the same day he formally notified Taiwan that the United States will sell the island a major arms package, which includes destroyers and submarines. In a separate interview with the Washington Post on Tuesday, President Bush said he has "made it clear to the Taiwanese" that the United States will end a 20-year policy of annually reviewing arms sales to Taiwan. "We will meet on an as-needed basis," he told the newspaper.
