WASHINGTON (AP) -- The crew of the Navy surveillance plane held 11 days on China's Hainan island will receive the Air Medal for heroism and the pilot, Lt. Shane Osborn, is expected to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Also, Osborn and the senior enlisted man on the flight, Senior Chief Nicholas Mellos, will receive the Meritorious Service Medal for their exemplary conduct during the emergency landing on Hainan after their plane collided with a Chinese fighter jet, senior defense officials said.

All 24 U.S. crew members were held for questioning by the Chinese military. Osborn and Mellos were singled out because they were the senior officer and enlisted man.

The presentations are to be made Friday by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld in a ceremony at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., outside Washington, as part of the annual Joint Service Open House, the senior officials reported and Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., confirmed.

I agree. They were merely doing their jobs... nothing special. No medals warranted.

1. Is this so unusual during peacetime?
2. Are heroics required to receive a medal?
3. Who is being harmed by this besides it pissing off the Chinese?
4. Do we have enough heroes anymore?

I for one believe all who serve this country are heroes but that's just me. I am also glad as can be to see the return of respect to our military men and women after 8 years of them being shit on.

Going into enemy territory, on slightly higher than normal risk missions? No, it isn't that unusual. The Navy has been playing hardball with "the real thing" (ie. hostile foreign country's military forces) for decades. We beard the lion in his own den.

We bubbleheads regularly did similar things.... unwatched and unnoticed.... and officially unrecognized as well.

Yes. I believe the operative words are "above and beyond the call of duty".

If it's to piss off (or piss on) the Chinese, I'm all for it.

Never enough heroes... given the media's trashing of all the "real" ones.
