North Korea Test-Fires Anti-Ship Missile

Associated Press Writer

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea test-fired an anti-ship missile off its east coast Monday as President Bush and other leaders opened an Asian summit, the communist country's latest military exercise amid tensions over its nuclear program.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff declined to further identify the type of missile, but said North Korea has fired the same type two or three times this year. U.S. officials are more concerned about North Korea's efforts to develop a missile that could reach the United States.

``The land-to-ship missile North Korea test-fired today is seen as part of its annual exercise,'' said a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul, speaking on customary condition of anonymity.

The test came as Bush, meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, promoted a plan in which the United States, China, Russia, Japan and South Korea would jointly give North Korea written assurances it wouldn't be attacked, in exchange for its promise to dismantle its nuclear program.

Senior Bush administration officials, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said they'd concluded the missile test was a deliberately provocative action intended to grab attention.

On Sunday, Bush dismissed North Korea's demand the United States sign a nonaggression pact in exchange for nuclear concessions. . . .

Looks like they best figure out how to free up about 10 divisions[which we don't have].

Otherwise it is "Nuke 'em Duke" time/.

Do we have 'contained' Nukes?

North Korea has done this before. They fired one of their ballistic missiles over Japan earlier this year.

That nation's government has to be the most unsophisticated, ill-mannered political body since Genghis Khan.

One of these times they are going to fire a shot over Japan and it is going to fall short and hit the mainland... N.K. better watch it...

Kim Jong-il loves to bluster and provoke, in an attempt to gain . . . well, who knows?

Nonetheless, the threat they pose still can be dealt with in diplomatic channels for the time being. Kim does have some sense of self-preservation, and would probably not initiate a conflict which would result in the immediate demise of his regime.

The Iranian nuclear program, on the other hand, is a most pressing threat. While their actual program may be behind the PRK's, the radical mullahs have long wanted an "Islamic bomb," and have never disguised their intent to use it against Israel. As the leading state sponsor of international terrorism, the delivery of a nuclear suicide bomb to the US through Iran cannot be discounted, either.

The mad mullahs have no fear of retaliation, since martyrdom is their cherished goal. They cannot be allowed to possess a nuclear device, period, no matter what action must be taken to stop them.

This guy is crazy. Even China doesn't like him.

dPrasse: I believe that proposal is under active consideration. We need also to keep moving full speed on development of new missile defense systems against the possibility that the PRK will develop, buy, or steal ICBM technology.

BeauF: Welcome to FC! China knows fully well just how dangerous Kim is, which makes their lack of cooperation in adjusting his behavior even more baffling. Had they used their considerable influence {over 70% of imports to the PRK come from China, and they are vital to the regime's survival}, the crisis might already have been resolved. Since doing so would have enhanced China's image as a regional and world power, it is quite strange that they have not led in the effort.

True, Kim is an irritant and distraction to the US, but China's own interests should override that factor. It is as if one lived in a subdivision where one's crazy next-door neighbor practiced shooting in his backyard, but not doing anything to stop him because his noise annoys the guy across the street.

Why dont America, Japan and South Korea start lobbing missiles at and over North Korea?

Would they think it a small deal then if we and our allies did missile testing in that manner?

I think not!

Rink,

We still have many thousands of troops in S. Korea. It would not be in our interests to instigate something like that, when all of Seoul could be vaporized in a matter of minutes, along with thousands of US military men dead.

Methinks Bush is even smarter than we, his fans, thought he was. How could he possibly have come clean and told the REAL reason behind going into Iraq without compromising our ongoing intelligence efforts? Now we have an excellent vantage point for dealing with Iran and it's progressing nuke threat, eh?

Of course, the libidiots will bleat and shriek.....but who listens to them any more anyway? Ha ha ha!

Contained Nukes:

Ones that will have no fallout below 38th parallel.

I think we should nuke North Korea if we have too.

Rink, Nos' point is for the Allies not to start it. N. Korea will be the starter if it does. As Nos said, with the thousands of US Troops and civilian personel in Korea, it would be a huge blunder for us to instigate trouble.

I would be in favor though of cutting loose Japan on N. Korea if they were hit by a missile. We would be wrong to deny them.
