Jasper, a full-blooded Jack Russell Terrier, the most affection dog I've ever had, always happy, takes joy in everything and smart as a whip . . . except in one thing. He doesn't like other male dogs and thinks he's a doberman. He's utterly fearless and would charge any male dog of any size on sight. That's a very dangerous trait in a dog that's only 15 pounds soakin' wet.

We got a tri-colored Cocker Spaniel dog at 6 months of age, named Spanky. He was incredibly smart, and loved to go swimming in the pool during the hot summer days in Central CA. He got out of our backyard when we had hurricane force winds one night and blew down our fence. We had him for over 15 years.

Kat, your cat looks like my cat whose name is Coolidge. I call him Cool cat! My scanner is broke or I would show you a picture of him.

My dog, Earnhardt has been missing for a couple of weeks. I think someone has stolen him. I yelled for him until my lungs almost collapsed. I was going to take him with me to Miami for Christmas. I'm still holding out hope that he will miraculously come home.

I have 2 dogs, 4 cats and many tropical fish (mostly Africans)

Kate, I have two cats that look just like yours! Oliver who is about 1 1/2 years old and weighs in at a hefty 15 pounds and Zelda who is about 4 months old and sweet as can be. My other cats are Baxter (14 years old) and Gibson (12 years old).

My dogs are Elmo (a 9 year old cocker mix who is the smartest dog I have ever seen) and Jed (a 6 years old Wolfhound/Pointer mix) who is the stupidest, most timid dog I've ever seen, but he SOOO gentle and wonderful with our kids, despite the fact that he weighs about 120 pounds.

I love my furbabies! Wouldn't trade a one of them for anything! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

And Dreamer looks great too. do you often ride the horse?
I once went to a stable of a family that offers to take care of horses and you can ride the horses. I tried it for a while and a friend of mine even went on competitions but I didn't. It was too far away from home to go and practise every weekend. I'd like to ride a horse again though it was fun.

Toby is a real cutie.. I was never much of a cat person but toby changed me : )
He did some really cute things, it took him a couple days to get use to me, he'd come on the bed and crawl on kathrins tummy and put his paw out to her shoulder so i couldnt cuddle into kathrin, hes over-protective lol
He soon warmed to me and stopped trying to stop me cuddling kathrin lol

that pic shown was great.. took on my new digi cam.. the full size (800*600) looks great.. would make a nice wallpaper : )

*misses toby*

Peach - Peaches and creme colored domestic tabby, also somewhat mellow. I prefer the active/hyper cats though. More entertaining. She's a sweetie tho, and we love her, so we'll keep her.

In my home lives Mickey, a 4 yr old black, gray and white Tabby. He's declawed and neutered and stays indoors. He loves my other half. He stalks me and will run to the bed to wrestle with me. If I try to leave after wrestling by walking away, he will attack the back of my feet and bite me so I back away, only to have this 13 lb. cat following me all the way down the hall as I back away.

He's a psycho I tell ya!....but I love him though. I rescued him when he was a kitten.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon16.gif I had a peach colored cockapoo also, named Peaches. She was very mellow also and crawled onto me when I laid down to rest and read a good book. Here's me with one of the dogs (A shih tzu named Razzi) I prefer larger dogs but she was the littlest, sweetest pooch and really grew on me...

I have no time for pets right now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon17.gif But I adore dogs and cats and had 7 dogs at one time. I had two award winning blue ticks and my most favorite thing to do was take them coon hunting in the Fort Sill area when visiting relatives. I can't explain the adrenaline of chasing baying hounds in pursuit of feisty coons!

Hey Katanem, what a cute pic!

Fox, I had a Chilean Rose tarantula I found in the desert. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Fed it crickets and grasshoppers and if it was very very good, mealworms and beetles for treats. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

the next pic of that kitten ..he jumped off of my shoulder and ends up
in my cereal bowl , eating Cheerios .......

yep ,.Barney was a cutey , his mother was killed a day after he was born , so I raised him from day 2 ....

his name came in honor of Deputy Barney Fife , from the Andy Griffith show ..his eyes bugged out and his head shook , just like his namesake ! ....

also , we've always had horses on the farm , our current one is a retired barrel racer/cutting horse ...she still "cuts" all by herself ....sorts calves out for her own entertainment .... my Grandpa Prasse wasa "horse jockey" , always trading for the cheap bad ass horses , breaking them andselling for a sweet profit ....

also , have had runt/orphan baby pigs running amock in the house ...

never had pet rocks , spiders or katydids ..

had a pet chameleon , that laid an egg that hatched ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

pet turtle named Flloyd ..... he was funny .andsmart ..... always tried to get behind the stereo stand ..he'd walk real stealth like , then "sprint for the stereo as i ran to grab him and send him back ti the dining room ....
he atr fruit coctail .....mmmmmmmm ......

It does eat birds (babies in the nest), but its main diet is small ground critters. And they have been measured at over 11" across the legs.

The beastie is native to the northeastern South American jungle (rain forest, for those of you in Berkeley). It's another good reason not to live there.

I heard in Columbia they have this snake thats extremely dangerous and bout the most deadlY around, when mom and I went through the Panama canal, i wanted to go thri the forest excursion, mom didnt want me to, later when we came home found out theres this snake that can strike out rapidly at a person and there is little hope in those remote areas of survival because its venom is so deadly so fast (I cant remember the derned snake at this momrnt)

(I still wanted to go to the forest thing, but owell.)

I guess its not like traipsing through the pacific Northwest woods, east of me all you have to contend with in lieu of poisonous snakes is rattlesnakes, here, its way too wet for rattlers.

Never had any probs goin thru my woods.
Not skeered o bears, cougars and whatnot cuz I know their nature.

And now...the list of the Top Ten Deadliest Snakes in the World.

(But first, the disclaimer: Every venom expert has a different top 10 list. Ours is based on discussions with several of the leading experts in the field as well as reliable published material.)

1) Fierce Snake or Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus ), Australia. The most toxic venom of any snake. Maximum yield recorded (for one bite) is 110mg. That would probably be enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000 mice. These rare snakes are virtually unknown in collections outside of Australia.

2) Australian Brown Snake (Pseudonaja textilis ), Australia. One 1/14,000 of an ounce of this venom is enough to kill a person. *On exhibit at Reptile Gardens

3) Malayan Krait (Bungarus candidus ), Southeast Asia and Indonesia. 50% of the bites from this snake are fatal even with the use of antivenin treatment. *On exhibit at Reptile Gardens

4) Taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus ), Australia. The venom delivered in a single Taipan bite is enough to kill up to 12,000 guinea pigs. *On exhibit at Reptile Gardens

5) Tiger Snake (Notechis scutatus ), Australia. The Tiger snake is a very aggressive snake that kills more people in Australia that any other snake on that continent. *On exhibit at Reptile Gardens

6) Beaked Sea Snake (Enhydrina schistosa ), South Asian waters Arabian Sea to Coral Sea..

7) Saw Scaled Viper (Echis carinatus ), Middle East Asia. Saw Scaled Vipers kill more people in Africa that all the other venomous African snakes combined. Its venom is 5 times more toxic than that of the cobra and 16 more toxic than the Russell's Viper. *On exhibit at Reptile Gardens

8) Coral Snake (Micrurus fulvius ), North America. Coral Snakes have a very potent venom but many are too small to deliver enough venom to kill a human. This is the only elapid (relative of the cobras and mambas) in the US.*On exhibit at Reptile Gardens

9) Boomslang (Dispholidus typus ), Africa. The Boomslang is the most seriously venomous rear-fanged snake in the world. They have very long fangs and can open their mouths a full 180 degrees to bite. Famous herpetologist Karl P. Schmidt died 28 hours after a Boomslang bite. The day after the bite, he called in to say he felt well and would be in to work...2 hours before he literally dropped dead from the bite. *On exhibit at Reptile Gardens

10) Death Adder (Acanthophis antarcticus ), Australia and New Guinea. The Death Adder looks like a viper but is more closely related to the cobras. A dosage of 10mg of Death Adder venom is enough to kill a human. A good sized Death Adder can deliver up to 180mg in a single bite. *On exhibit at Reptile Gardens.

My daughter spent a couple of weeks Down Under in March. She loved the place and would go back in a heartbeat. I suppose that if one stays away from places where the creepy crawlies (or slitheries) hang out, it would be a good place to visit.

http://www.kingsnake.com/toxinology/old/images/pseudonaja/Pseudonaja.JPG[ QUOTE ]
Pseudonaja textilis (Eastern brown snake) is the most toxic member of the genera and, at 12 times the toxicity of the Indian cobra Naja naja, it is the second most toxic land snake in Australia. However, due to the greater range, occurrence in urban areas and aggressive temperament, the eastern brown snake is the most dangerous and clinically important snake in Australia. The venom of the Eastern Brown snake is slow to produce effect, but once symptoms emerge they proceed with terrifying rapidity with death being sudden and unexpected. Part of the problem is that the early signs of the bite pathology closely resemble that of the occurrence of psychological shock and thus may be misdiagnosed.

That's pretty much sums up how I feel about cats. I'm tired of all the wild cats around my neighborhood using my yard and flower gardens as a dang potty. They also spray my front door and the paint is starting to show it. Smelly animals.

I have a companion dog and a bunny rabbit. Both of them have more finesse than any cat I've had contact with.

I like to evict spidders from my territory, as I know they are good for nature to have so I try to avoid killin em, its the brown recluses and black widows that I kill, (livin in a forested area, yea i get huge ass brown recluses in my basement, the size of a quarter or more on my walls, I dont hesitate to kilem and they definitely leave a wonderful brown stain on the walls once i do killem.

O and GWTW, there is products you can use to keep cats and dogs away from your flowerbeds and such, there is some stuff you can sprinkel on that they dont like, its to keep em from potying indoors, dunno if theres products you can use to keep em aeay from your front porch or not if it is subject to rains.

But its worth checking into, I bet you can find any cat & dog away powder or spray at any Petco store or pet place, be worth lookin into if you wanna keep em off your porch if anything.

The brown recluse is a really nasty SOB.

[ QUOTE ]
Bite Symptoms

The severity of a person's reaction to the bite depends on the amount of venom injected and individual sensitivity to it. Bite effects may be nothing at all, immediate or delayed. Some may not be aware of the bite for 2 to 8 hours, whereas others feel a stinging sensation usually followed by intense pain if there is a severe reaction. A small white blister usually rises at the bite site surrounded by a large congested and swollen area. Within 24 to 36 hours, a systemic reaction may occur with the victim characterized by restlessness, fever, chills, nausea, weakness and joint pain. The affected area enlarges, becomes inflamed and the tissue is hard to the touch. The spider's venom contains an enzyme that destroys cell membranes in the wound area with affected tissue gradually sloughing away, exposing underlying tissues. Within 24 hours, the bite site can erupt into a "volcano lesion" (a hole in the flesh due to damaged, gangrenous tissue).

The open wound may range from the size of an adult's thumbnail to the span of a hand. The sunken, ulcerating sore may heal slowly up to 6 to 8 weeks. Full recovery may take several months and scarring may remain. Plastic surgery and skin grafts are sometimes required.

He doesn't even go toilet outside he always pulls be back home to go toilet which I think is seriously cool and he always comes up to me and signals that he went toilet so I can clean it.. not sure how to describe how i just remark it from his behavior to me lol

Why ya think I check my shoes before i ever put em on and my clothes, shirts and pants for? I know what romps around in my basment place he he

I've not had any problems tho from em, cuz I'm a very very astute observer of my surroundings and I usually spot em fast as lightning on thewall, ceiling or windowsill quick enough to nail em dead.

I wont kill the little spiders tho, they dont bother me and i dont bother them, I leave the skinny lil buggers alone, got a daddy long legs livin in my bathroom, he seems very content to 'hang' around, one time he got caught in my shower room when I started a shower, it was apparent the lil guy was unhappy bout my showering, I just kept an eye on him and then once I left he scooted real quicky to safety.

I'm an ol softie dont like killin livin things unless theres a really good reason, spidders really need to stay outside, especially the big ones, thats their living area, move indoors and I'll either trap em 9the small ones) and toss em out or kill em (the huge dangerous ones).

Oh, Lord... this reminds me of a commercial on TV where they actually have a cockroach crawling across the screen. The first time I saw it, I thought it was a real-inside-my-house-type cockroach and I went crazy and threw a pillow at it. Had it been a heavier object, I would have smashed the TV screen. Then I realized it was part of a commercial for exterminators. Scared the living daylights outta me! I thought i had cockroaches. Nasty things! Ugly too! I'm always thinking I see one out of the corner of my eye. Then I look around and never see anything. I had them once. It's terrible once they get into your house. They were getting in through the pipes.

[ QUOTE ]
Long legged cellar spiders are one of the most common spiders in households and have a worldwide distribution. They have been reported from American, European, Asian and Australian houses, Italian caves and Korean volcanoes. Their scentific name is Pholcus phalangioides (Fuesslin, 1775). Pholcus are fragile spiders with very long legs and an elongated body. Body and legs are almost translucent and with a microscope the movement of blood cells in legs and other body parts can be followed in a live animal.

[ QUOTE ]
Cellar spiders live only in the safety of human homes: attics, cellars, garages and messy rooms where they can hang upside down in webs. Cellar spiders have gray-brown bodies that are about half an inch long. They have very long, skinny legs. Many times, cellar spiders are confused with Daddy Longlegs. Daddy Longlegs are usually not seen in Southern California. Daddy Longlegs are really not spiders. Their bodies are oval shaped. A true spider's body has two parts.

They look mean, but they're really nothing to worry about.

Ok, it's official. I have the creeps for the next ten years, lol. I hate spiders with a passion - they never last long once I see them. Of course, it's hard to tell if they die from squashing or having their itty-bitty eardrums shattered. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon126.gif

We currently have three cats. One spoiled rotten Himalayan that weighs in at about 18 lbs, most of which is fur. He's my baby, sleeps with me, follows me around, etc. Then we have the diabolical delinquint duo - litter mates that are about three months old. Dh brought them home from work - why is it when I see something cute and cuddly, it stays where I found it, but when he finds something cute and cuddly it moves in with us??? Anyway, I'd say they were thoroughly cute and adorable, only they discovered my Christmas tree today, so they are currently on probation. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hell, I have quite a few 78s. The one thing I don't have is Edison cylinders, although I do have a booklet from WW1 that came with one of the Edison machines.

Speaking of ancient, has anyone ever seen a book by Popular Science called "Radio For The Millions", published sixty years ago. This is a museum piece, with instructions for building a variety of tube radios, including a one-tube "pocket receiver" and a portable that "weighs but a few pounds". This is geat flashback stuff for old farts such as VTY.

BTW, it was Jim Stafford who did "Spiders and Snakes".

I remember when Mary Lou said
'You wanna walk me home from school'
And I said, 'Yes, I do'
She said, 'I don't have to go right home
And I'm the kind that likes to be alone
As long as you would'
I said, 'Me, too'

And so we took a stroll
Wound up down by the swimmin' hole
And she said, 'Do what you want to do'
I got silly and I found a frog
In the water by a hollow log
And I shook it at her
And I said 'This frog's for you'
She said...

Chorus:
'I don't like spiders and snakes
And that ain't what it takes to love me
You fool, you fool
I don't like spiders and snakes
And that ain't what it takes to love me
Like I want to be loved by you'

Well, I think of that girl from time to time
I call her up when I got a dime
I say, "Hello, baby'
She says, 'Ain't you cool'
I say, 'Do you remember when?
And would you like to get together again?'
She says, 'I'll see you after school'

I was shy and so for a while
Most of my love was touch and smile
Til she said, 'Come on over here'
I was nervous as you might guess
Still looking for somethin' to slip down her dress
And she said, 'Let's make it perfectly clear'
She said...

Chorus

Rink

Yeah, the BRs bite is very destructive to human tissue. We used to have to check all the latrines at summer camp every week for them when I worked on staff because we didn't want the scouts getting bit on their bottoms. We had one bite one year and the boy nearly lost use of his hand but did recover.

This was my favorite activity each week next to our weekly rattlesnake hunts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It is amazing how many "hi tech" fields stilll employ tube test instruments , and still order 45v "B" batteries ...

Not really, when you understand why. The average tube amplifier can provide many times the power handling capability of the average solid state amplifier. Since there are still applications out there where power handling is a paramount concern, there is still a demand for tubes.
