Priest in Britain Advises Congregation to Shoplift
priest in Britain is under fire Monday for advising his congregation to shoplift in tough economic times, the Daily Mail reports.
Father Tim Jones, a 41-year-old clergyman at St. Lawrence Church in York, England, said that shoplifting — rather than prostitution or burglary — is sometimes the best option for poor people struggling to make ends meet, according to the Web site.
"My advice as a Christian priest is to shoplift," Jones reportedly told churchgoers during his Sunday sermon. "I do not offer such advice because I think that stealing is a good thing, or because I think it is harmless, for it is neither."
*snip*
"I would ask them not to take any more than they need, for any longer than they need ... My advice does not contradict the Bible's eighth commandment because God's love for the poor and despised outweighs the property rights of the rich."
Moral relativism. Idiot. :flame:

How about telling the lazy asses to do some manual labor in exchange for food?

Yo!, Timmy, wake up. What you have advised them to do is prostitution. They are selling their souls for their material wants. They are stealing from the shopkeepers.
Tell them, Timmy, that they no longer have to tithe 10%. Instead, you, and your MEGABILLION Church will tithe THEM 11%. You are in the 'game' of cherity, aren't you Timkins?
Today, shoplifting. Tomorrow, I'll lead my flock (sheep) to slaughter.

Ferget jail, he's leading them straight to Hell...and, since the Lord holds TEACHERS to a higher standard, he's goin' right along with 'em...heck, God might give the flock a pass, should they heed this clown's advice, but I doubt it.
Unbelievable.

Doesn't say if he is Anglican or Catholic. Regardless, the Catholic Church (and I'm sure the Anglican) does not condone this. Will be interested in seeing how he is dealt with.

shoplifting — rather than prostitution or burglaryI suppose shoplifting would be preferable to burglary in the United States, but only because we allow homeowners to keep firearms on the premises. It'd be a lot less hazardous to get caught trying to snatch something from a store than to burgle something from a home.
Prostitution is always dangerous. Lotsa diseases in tuna fish market.

...but on this side of the pond, that's a qualification for public office.

This is Britian where the government finds locks on sheds illegal because burglars have too much trouble breaking in.
I find this priest's statement "outweighs the property rights of the rich" pertinent. The storekeepers are "rich" so it's okay to steal from them. When the storekeeper is robbed out of existence where are the poor going to buy anything at any price? Now that he has justified stealing from someone perceived as "rich" what is to stop "the poor" from stealing from other "poor" because they have someone that the other person doesn't have? Nothing. Why should stealing be limited to stores? Doesn't this priest find such discriminatory? Why not the nice house? They are obviously rich. Why not that nicely dressed woman walking down the street? Isn't she wearing some jewelry. Surely her property rights to that jewelry is outweighed by the needs of the poor.
What tripe. Perhaps the poor should start with his Church.

Just an indication of where the right to steal from the rich leads.
A charity that collects goods to give to the poor has just been robbed for the third time since Thanksgiving.
Someone thought that this charity had more than they did and it was okay to rob this collection depot.
The first time it was a big haul because the charity has been collecting food and toys for quite awhile.
The second time it wasn't that big because it was collections from those people who wanted to make up for the loss.
The third time, there was nothing so the burglars just trashed the place in a fit of pique.
So much for "the poor".

I seriously thought that was a joke when I read it...do we know if any of the congregation actually took the advice?
What Christian would hear that and think "Thats a good idea"?

Anyone who wants justification for an act they wouldn't ordinarily do.

A lot of liberal "Christians" would argue that a choice of evils is at work here. If the alternative is suffering or death, then stealing may be acceptable.
There are stories in the Bible of people doing things that were "wrong" or "illegal" for a greater good.

That's exactly what a priest said on Fox News today, talking about this subject. He also suggested people go to places where they help poor people. He said his church had one such place.
This has nothing to do with compassion, guys. What this clown is encouraging is pure, unadulterated THEFT. And all because of the hatred for the eeeevil big companies (department stores).
This PoS should be defrocked, and no mistake.
