Oh...man...ya gotta go see that movie WL!! It had my attention all the way through it. Boy...did it ever yank at my memory and remind me of when I went to college! It was a joke for women to go to college even in 1969!! Alot of pressure to get married. Always the inside joke: "What are YOU here for? Your M.R.S. degree??" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon133.gif
Actually I went to Woodbury College for my B.S. degree. (NOT "Bachelor of Science"!!) Everybody KNEW it was "Bull Shit"!! My parents were not unlike many parents back then... "Send the kid to college, but expect you won't be paying tuition for long..."
Then came along the bra-burning "you can do it all" crowd, which was bullshit... Somehow, a woman was supposed to graduate, get married, have kids and do the laundry and vacuuming in a chiffon dress and pearls; Then have dinner ready for a crowd of 20 or more by seven!
You gotta see that movie!
Thanks everybody for all the wonderful B-day messages!!! This is wonderful. That was great fun Finman! I really enjoyed it! Thanks!

You know what I'd really like to do some day? I've always wanted to take the Southern Pacific Railroad through Tehachapi. I like trains!!! Woulda been delighted to be an engineer or at least on a caboose, which they don't have anymore... That was always my dream!

Gone, when I was in nursing school my parents bought me a ticket to New Orleans when I was on spring break. The Engineer allowed me to stay in his cabin so I could study. It was such a wonderful experience. I highly recommend you take a train trip.

When I was a kid, I almost burned down our house because of my electric train!!! We had the train running under my brother's bed and the carpet started on fire!!! My mom was cooking dinner and I secretly called the fire department and they came to the house with their big hoses, dragging them into the house! My mom just looked at 'em and kept on cooking!!! When my dad got home, there was all these fire trucks in front of the house with the hoses going inside. The firemen asked my mom to turn off the stove so they could find the fire. But she told them she had to have dinner ready and she wasn't about to let the fire stop her.
Terrible!!! Talk about a "disfunctional family"!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon133.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon133.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon16.gif
They found the fire smoldering under my brother's bed; Put the thing out, and left saying to my mom: "Enjoy your dinner".
The Tehachapis are just a few miles from me. The route the SP takes goes right through there. It's called a "cork screw". There's quite a history behind it. Lots of work to build that R.R. And I love Tehachapi itself. It's an old town-- very warm and welcoming; Old fashioned. If you ever come this way, you'd love the place!
We used to take the train from California to Chicago. I used to ride in the dome car all the time. The food was great! (My dad spent most of his time in the bar!!)
I sure wish they'd bring them back. There are a few running, but not enough in my humble opinion.
About 7 years ago, the LAST steam engine came through town. When it got here, it blew that hauntingly beautiful horn all the way through. What a fantastic piece of artistic genius that was!!!

I used to live in Bakersfield, and it is just a hop, skip and jump to the Tehachapis. Went to a great steak house in Dec one year. There was snow on the ground, and it was beautiful. Every thing Gone said about the town is true. So many from Bakersfield moved there because of the welcoming to others. As I recall, some place in Tehachapi, there is a train car converted into a restaurant. This was many years ago, so I don't know if it's still there.

It's still there, Cali! The restaurant, I mean. We also have one of them here in Lancaster!!! The railroad goes right through here, only a mile from my house!!!
You're right about Bakersfield people! Lancaster people from the south side of the Tehachapis and Bakersfield people come to Tehachapis from the North! I like the antique shops. I go there looking for antiques. There's also a tea house where you can sit down and have English-style biscuits and tea. A great place to go. There's also apple and cherry farms where you can pick your own fruit!

My in-laws in their younger days would drive from Orange County, CA [about a 3 hour drive] to the Tehachapis for the apple juice they made. It's the best tasting I have ever had. You are bringing back a lot of fond memories I had forgotten about, thanks! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon76.gif

I didn't know you're a big time railfan. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif I have taken a good number of pictures of Santa Fe and Southern Pacific trains going through the famous Tehachapi Loop--including the famous Oil Can trains that ran from just north of Bakersfield to Long Beach for nearly 15 years. I'll have to dig out my photo albums and find those pictures. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon115.gif

Gone,
Amtrak I'm assuming, yes?
Next question. Does she still blow through to Chicago from So. Cal? How long does it take?
Final question. What's the going rate?

Yes, it's Amtrak. The ones I'm familiar with that go from one end to the country to the other are tour-types. I don't know the route, but there are only two I'm familiar with. One follows the highway 15 route and by-passes the Sierras, making its way through the southern states and then turning north on the other side of the country-- the fall tour is the most popular. People like the New England states during the fall.
The other route goes up the California coast through Oregon and Washington. It's the Northwestern tour.
As far as regularly scheduled routes, I'm unfamiliar with those and their prices. The tours are less, depending on how many people book the tour. I've seen them as low as $700. That includes lodging and meals. But they don't include the Tehachapis.
The SP railroad we took when I was a kid, by-passed the Sierras. They didn't have the cork screw through there back then and it could take a person a whole day just to get past the Tehachapis. Now with the cork screw it takes just a coupla hours. A trip from Upland, California to Chicago took 3 1/2 days.
