Our sweetest Administrator, Chris, is going under the knife in the morning. She is having a spot removed from her lung. It is slow growing and the doctors are 75% sure it's not cancer. Her surgery is at 6:30 AM EST tomorrow morning. I'm asking all of you to keep her in your prayers tonight and until she's out of the woods. Chris we all love you and will be praying for you dear heart. Keep your chin up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif

I have such a peace about her surgery. Chris I know you are going to check on this thread before you leave in the morning. You are so loved by everyone here and just know that we will all be thinking about you and praying for you tomorrow. You have excellent doctors and nurses caring for you and a wonderful husband and family by your side. You are so blessed and know that God will be with you as well.

Chris's husband is supposed to let me know something as soon as he can tomorrow. He will be very busy as there are about 50 people on his call list. Let's just hope we are close to the top of the list. Chris has a wonderful and supportive husband and we should include him in our prayers. I'm sure he is as frightened as Chris is.

Of course, Warlday! I have included her husband and family in my prayers. I hope her husband contacts us soon as the surgery is over because we will be eager to hear that everything went well and it is 100% benign. I will be thinking of Chris all night, and praying for all of her family.

It is Harv. Arresting the Clinton's would make my year. But this is just as good. Even better IMO. I know for a fact that they were planning on doing a frozen section on the tissue they removed so if it was cancer it would have shown up. TB is no fun. I don't think she will be able to drink alcohol for 12 months while she's on the medicine. That used to be the case. The treatment could have changed since I was in nursing. I bet tacitus would know. Still much better than cancer.

You know? They've known about this spot for months. Why the hell didn't they run a simple TB test? They've had her and her family sick with worry.

HarvickFan29
01-08-2004, 10:14 AM
I was wondering the same but since I didn't know the details, I didn't want to jump to conclusions. You raise a very good question, and one I'm sure Chris will get to the bottom of. Perhaps they couldn't do a TB test until they removed it? Confused.

Warlady
01-08-2004, 10:30 AM
No that doesn't make sense. When a spot shows up on your chest xray TB test should be one of the first tests they run.

HarvickFan29
01-08-2004, 10:35 AM
Warlady, I ain't a doctor but it would certainly seem like they would initially do that! But, regardless, they'd have to remove it? Right?

Warlady
01-08-2004, 10:56 AM
I don't think they routinely remove TB spots. You would have to check with a doctor but I've never heard of it before.

tacitus
01-08-2004, 11:24 AM
Thank you Lord indeed.

WL I know zip about TB. I was stationed at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center back in the mid 60's when it was the TB center for the military. I know that we did receive TB shots when I was in the military, and they still recommend that employees at the Unniversity Hospital here in Denver get annual boosters.

I can't understand why the docs suggested the worse case, unless she has a history in her family. Still a simple scratch test would have been pretty darn simple and quick.

As for drinking and the meds, probably better she didn't.

They don't surgically remove TB spots on the lungs. I'm being treated for a TB related bacteria and the TB is an infection that affects the entire body. The spot is just a symptom of the wider spread of the disease. They get rid of the spot with mega doses of anti-biotics for six months up to sometimes more than a year. She'll be on a strict antibiotic routine. At first the treatment might be hard on her tummy. She may be nauseated and have a headache. She may run a chronic fever. She'll be tired much of the time. She'll be subject to lung illnesses like pneumonia and the flu. But as the antibiotics are assimilated into her system, she get used to all that and return to her normal routine. Once these antibiotics work their magic, you'll see a whole new Chris emerging.

Also, it's not like in the old days. She doesn't have to be confined and removed from her family. Once she starts the antibiotic treatment, she can't infect other people. The spot will go away with time. No surgery necessary.

WL, could it be that since she's a smoker they wanted to make sure it wasn't a tumor? It seems to me that if they did the TB test and it was positive, and they treated her just for that which apparently takes a while to cure, she could still have a tumor that meanwhile wouldn't have been being treated. Just a guess - it's all I can think of that makes sense.

I have not been here for a little while, so I was not aware of Chris's situation until just now.

Thank God that is was only TB and not something worse. Granted, TB is nothing to laugh at and the treatments are intense, but still a huge relief that it was not what the Doctor thought it might be.

Prayers and hugs for a speedy and pain-free-as-can-be recovery, Chris. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon115.gif

A couple of Christmases ago, James Dobson (Focus on the Family) circulated a story about a woman infected with TB. It was a true story told by her doctor and took place somwhere in Canada, Nova Scotia, back in the late 1940s, if I remember correctly. It goes something like this.
<ul type="square">The woman had been diagnosed with TB. The hole in her lung was in a place that, at the time, was inoperable. All the doctors could do was to watch her waste away and die.

Christmas was coming, and the woman asked if they would allow her to go home to spend her last Christmas with her husband and children. The doctors initially declined, but her pleas were so intense and so evocative, that the doctors, figuring her case was hopeless, decided to allow her to visit her family for Christmas.

After Christmas, she returned to the hospital to die. But come February, her condition had not worsened, but she started showing other symptoms. She was vomiting and experiencing fatigue.

A test confirmed the doctors' worse fears.

She was pregnant.

The doctors advised her that an abortion was necessary, but the woman was horrified at the prospect. Being a Christian, the woman refused to allow the abortion. She was able to convince them that, since her case was hopeless anyway, she preferred rather to die together with her baby.

Once again, against their better judgement, the doctors relented and granted the woman her wish.

But as the weeks passed, she began to regain strength. Her color returned to her cheeks, her appetite increased, and she started gaining weight.

The doctors were utterly puzzled.

Until they saw the x-ray.

There they saw that the growing baby had been pushing against the hole in the woman's lung, effectively closing it and causing it to heal.

The baby was born healthy, the woman's hole in her lung was repaired, and she returned to her family with her new baby and her flourishing new health.[/list]

I just got off the phone with Chris. She may get to come home tomorrow. She was feeling no pain. They gave her a saddle block or something similar and morphine shots PRN. She had just gotten a morphine shot so she was quite happy. She promises not to start smoking again but I think we need to double our prayers for her to stay off of them. The nurse had just brought her a snack and she was going to watch a movie. She sounded a little tired but other than that she is in great spirits. She said to say hello to everyone and thanks for all the well wishes. She may even try to post tomorrow evening if she's up to it.

You know, when I saw your handle "Charity", it reminded me of a more recent Twilight Zone episode, (from 1986) when they did a story about a modern teenager who became mentally interlinked with a young pilgrim woman from the Salem days (Her name was also Charity) . Their relationship became so initimate that the other Pilgrims almost burned her at the stake for talking to someone from the 20th century. The funny thing was, that at the end of the episode, the young Pilgrim women carved their initials in a tree that the 20th century teen was able to still see centuries later.

Geez, I am babbling. Then again, I am known for that around here.

Thank you so much for your prayers for my family and me. The Lord has truly blessed me in all of this. I've been a bit overwhelmed at the amount of love that has been directed at me, and prayers said for me by you all here, by those where I live and in my church, and, I've been told, by missionaries around the world. It boogles the mind, and I can't thank you all enough.

I'll try to answer your questions that I read along the way. If I miss anything though, let me know, because I am still on pain meds so I kept drifting off in the middle of things, and waking up with my head leaning back and my mouth wide open like a baby bird. http://www.discodelic.netfirms.com/silly-drool1.gif

Someone asked why they didn't do I a TB tine test. Venus more or less touched on the reason. The only one that ever mentioned that TB as a possibility was my second opinion surgeon (who was the one I had do the surgery). He was the only one who had ever come across it when all the scans looked like cancer. The only way they can be sure though is do a biopsy, which is basically what they did.

The surgery was called a V-section biopsy. The spot was in the top of my right lope. They cut it out and sent it to the lab while I was still under. If it had come back positive for cancer, they would have taken that whole top lobe out.

Anyway, every doctor that looked at the scans thought it was cancer. The 75% chance thing that Brenda mentioned was from the surgeon I ended up going with though, and that was a 75% chance that it wasn't in my lymphnodes if I was cancer. That's what the scans indicated.

I went with this surgeon, because lungs were his speciality and he uses techniques that some of the others didn't know were possible with lung surgery, like doing it with scopes and not having to cut out ribs and stuff like that. The whole thing was about as none invasive as you could get for lung surgery. I only have three little slits in my side, and all I lost was the spot on my lung and a little bit of tissue around it, instead of ending up with a cut from front to back, and losing a rib and whole lobe for no reason.

Anyway, the less invasive - the faster you heal too. That's why I didn't end up in ICU. I did end up kind of quarantined in my room though, because they weren't sure what I had yet or if I was contagious. Everyone had to wear masks when they came in that made them look like ducks. They were yellow on the top part too. I felt like I was existing inside an Aflac commercial. Of course, the morphine could have had something to do with that feeling too, just like it kept turning me into a baby bird. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'll be back in the morning to tell you all the rest. I've been drifting in and out a lot again.....

In response to Chris' good report, I offer up this song of praise to God!

[ QUOTE ]
Psalm 150 (msg)

Hallelujah! Praise God in his holy house of worship,
praise him under the open skies;
Praise him for his acts of power,
praise him for his magnificent greatness;
Praise with a blast on the trumpet,
praise by strumming soft strings;
Praise him with castanets and dance,
praise him with banjo and flute;
Praise him with cymbals and a big bass drum,
praise him with fiddles and mandolin.
Let every living, breathing creature praise GOD!

Hallelujah!

Thanks again to you all. I'm so glad to be back.

WL, I doubt I'll be able to overdo it cause I keep falling asleep. http://www.discodelic.netfirms.com/blah-sleeping6.gif

Btw, I got a wonderful surprise this afternoon. I received the flowers, bear and balloons FC sent. I can't thank you all enough. The tulips are gorgeous. They remind me of the garden in spring...a time I'm going to especially enjoy this year. And, I LOVE THAT TEDDY BEAR!!! It's so soft, and the colors are perfect - red bear with white and blue ribbons. http://www.discodelic.netfirms.com/signs-yourock2.gif

Amen to that, and I'll add "praise Him with the little breath measuring thingy by getting it way above the 1500 mark." http://www.discodelic.netfirms.com/happy-cheering.gif

That's wonderful Chris about your breathing. I told them to send you a patriotic bear /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Well, my breathing isn't wonderful yet, but I'm improving again. They kept me in the hospital that extra day because of it. I was doing good until they took that chest/drain tube thing out, so they x-rayed me again and I had an air pocket that was too big to send me home with cause it could cause my lung to collapse (or something like that http://freeconservatives.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/goofyeyes.gif). It hadn't even completely inflated again since the surgery, so I was glad to stay cause I figured the cardiovascular unit is the place to be if you think your lung might collapse. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

The infectious diseases doc had taken me out of quarantine by then too, so I was able to walk around a lot that day and that helped me improve more too. And, the chest tube wound drained real well so they could change that dressing and stuff for me before leaving too, instead of us having to do it later at home. All in all, I was better off staying that extra time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'm glad they kept you until you were right Chris. I've had a chest tube. They are not fun. And don't you dare smoke. Please promise me.

Chris, no smoking young lady! (Not shaking my finger like Clinton). Don't make the Warlady and I have to come up to Pennsylvania! Plus, it's too cold up there for us Southerners. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

I'm glad to hear your breathing is improving, and it appears your attitude is great about it. I'm proud of ya. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon16.gif

She's not going to smoke. She knows she dodged the bullet this time. She might not be so lucky next time. Right Chris? It isn't worth it. You are God's gift and nothing is more important than you being there for your husband, your children and your grandchildren. Nothing. And as my Mother told me (who was also a smoker) it's about quality of life when you get older as well. Because she smoked her last years were horrible. She had to be tube fed through a shunt in her stomach because of throat cancer due to smoking.

Hi Chris /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
So glad to hear you are on the road to recovery. My friend Mindy went through a similar episode not too long ago. She used to smoke 3 packs a day too. The doc told her it was no longer an option and after her lungs gave out and she was in the hospital for several weeks, she gave em up. I think it's been about 4 months now and she has stopped altogether. I thought it was going to be hard for her, but she seemed to not mind at all.
I am Charity BTW /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
You have wonderful friends here who really love you. This is such a blessing and a treasure. I am so glad I get to meet you. You get well real soon. God is Good.

Why is it that we say, "Quit," or "Give up"--which I think are such "loser words," when we talk about someone freeing themselves from smoking? There is no greater success in life for a smoker than stopping smoking, IMHO, yet our language uses "failure words" to denote it.

My problem is not with Charity. It's with our language.

All the best to Charity's friend Mindy, to Chris, and to Warlady.

Thanks DTS. I guess we could say "smoking cessation" or I 'freed" myself from the demon tobacco. But it all means the same thing. I quit smoking 9 months ago and it feels wonderful. I no longer have to cough in the middle of a sentence or cough up junk every morning or clear my throat every few minutes. I can breathe! I highly recommend to anyone who smokes to give it up now. It's a deadly habit and even if you don't get cancer from it it severely hinders your quality of life. Especially in your later years. It's the most addictive product on the planet. Make no mistake. It is the most difficult habit to break and stay away from. Trust me.

Miss Harv means that she has been smoke free for almost 8 years.

I hang my head in shame, because I still pay the Hllary tax when it comes to payng the ciggy tax.
