Late 30's to early 40s, possibly a Chrysler DeSoto, judging by the grill. The pic is a 1939 DeSoto. But, don't rely on that. Grills changed as fast then as they do now.

I don't know. The 39 Chrysler was similar to the 39 Ford in that they both had wheel well mounted headlights. However I do know tht SOME 39 Fords had the stilt mounted lights. The grill certainly looks like a DeSoto however the headlights are clearly mounted on stilts instead of instead of inside the wheel. Did a version of the Chrysler come with that mounting? Or maybe we have a wrong year? The 38 Crysler Royal does have the external headlight mounts however has the wrong grill face.
Maybe this was an early production run 39 DeSoto where they were still moving from the stilt to the internal mounts?
It is so hard to tell. I am not a car expert by any stretch of the imagination and the fact that so many older cars look so much a like except for minor differences really has me stumped on this.

I've been through a couple of dozen antique/classic car sites and haven't found a match for it. But, I'll continue to surf around, cuz I'm curious.
Rink, if you can scan it at a higher res and post it (or a link to it if it's too big to display on the board), there might be some clues in the details. It's hard to make a determination at low res.

Not to sound bloody obvious, but if we could get a better look at the nameplate on the front, that would help.
lol one thing, the fella thats washing the car is my dad, and he was a CHEV man lol doubt it would ever be a ford heehee.
I'll see what I can do about the resolution, my scanner is very old, wont work with winXP Pro lol
so I'll see what I can do with it.

I looks like a Sedan or POSSIBLLY a woody wagon. I can say with pretty much certanty it isn't a truck (could be wrong however) but if you know the type it would probably help.

I would of said it was a Crysler. Fords during the same time period were a little boxier looking. I didn't even know DeSotos existed until the 1950's. My dad bought a DeSoto in the mid fifties. It was a sleek looking car.
Now you have me curious.
Well mom tells me it was a Chevy coupe, and that dad bought it right after he got out from WW2, so thats all I know, I dunno what year it is
mom thinks its in that range

Looks to be a 1940 Chevy, coupe or sedan. Can't tell from the front camera shot.

I always looked for the running boards (AKA "gangster boards") on the side of the car. This car doesn't seem to have any, so I would have dated it late 40's. In the fifties running boards began to disappear altogether.

Because of the front shot you can't see the running boards.
I'll attach some pictures of 1940 Chevs for you to compare.

I'm sure this is the same kind of car your dad is washing. I've looked the two pictures over closely.

Here's a side view.

1940 Chevy The bumper is slightly different without the pumber guards because it is a lower model, but a 40 chev none the less.

I love older (classic) cars. Here's a picture of my '65 Dodge Coronet. It's the yellow one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

1940 Chevy Special Deluxe
The 1940 Chevrolet was completely restyled. The engine was still a 216.5 cubic inch inline six cylder producing 85 horsepower. A single driver side windshield wiper was standard equipment.

If this isn't the exact model, it's very close. They year is almost definitely 1940. The '39 and '41 grills are different.
Another similar image.

As Sergeant Preston would say, "Well, King, this case is closed." And if you remember that, you may well have ridden in one of those. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

If you guys ever wanna see them lemme know k?
I dunno who is in them or their names or anything, as dad never spoke about the war. All i got is just pics of unknown people in a small group with him and some snippets mom told me.

Yup, that looks about right. The front view photo really threw me off because I couldn't see the running boards.
There sure was a lot of steel put into those cars. They were heavy and ate up a lot of gasoline, but were safer than some of the tinker toys made out of fiber glass we see today.
Oyea, gimme time I'll see if i can get a sphoto of mom's first car scanned for yaz someday, it was a 55 Chevy Bel Aire Hardtop heehe
When dad sold that baby it still had its original engine in it, $10,000 he sold it to a neighbor-friend who collects cars.

My grandma drove a 1954 Bentley. I really liked riding in it, but she looked so tiny in it! She was just a little ol' petite lady, who wore white laced gloves and a little 40's style hat who disappeared behind the wheel.
A little fender bender shook her up so badly, she voluntarily turned in her driver's license and depended on everyone else to drive her places. My mom was absolutely sick to see the Bentley go.
