EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AP) -- The U.S. Air Force is honoring the victims of Sept. 11 with a new aircraft logo bearing Todd Beamer's phrase "Let's Roll."
The national catchphrase is being displayed on various Air Force aircraft until the first anniversary of the attacks in September.
The design depicts a bald eagle soaring in front of the U.S. flag with the words "Spirit of 9-11" set in a golden sword and the phrase "Let's Roll" underneath the eagle's talons.
Four F-15s at the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base now bear the logo near the cockpit.
"This is certainly great for the American people, to show them how much we realize all that everyone has done in stepping up to the plate in what happened to this country," said Col. Hawk Carlisle, commander of the 33rd. "Todd Beamer is a great example of what the American people are like."
....
The artwork was designed by Senior Airman Duane T. White of Air Combat Command's multimedia center at Langley Air Force Base, Va.
White, 24, of Teaneck, N.J., said he was trying to express the nation's resolve. He said the eagle appears to be striking back and flying with a purpose and the sword symbolizes strength and power.
"I'm more than honored. To be completely honest, I feel honored but all the admiration I'm getting is unjustified because the people who lost their lives are the ones who made the big sacrifice," White said. "I'm just happy to contribute something."
