Don't know who wrote this, or how true it is, but it's a good story.

quote:
Richard, my husband, never really talked a lot about his time in Viet Nam other than he had been shot by a sniper. However, he had a rather grainy, 8X10 black & white photo he had taken at a USO show of Ann Margaret with Bob Hope in the background that was one of his treasures.

A few years ago, Ann Margret was doing a book signing at a local bookstore. Richard wanted to see if he could get her to sign the treasured photo so he arrived at the bookstore at 12 o'clock for the 7:30 signing. When I got there after work, the line went all the way around the bookstore, circled the parking lot, and disappeared behind a parking garage.

Before her appearance, bookstore employees announced that she would sign only her book, and no memorabilia would be permitted. Richard was disappointed, but wanted to show her the photo and let her know how much those shows meant to lonely GI's so far from home.

Ann Margret came out looking as beautiful as ever and, as 2nd in line, it was soon Richard's turn. He presented the book for her signature and then took out the photo with many shouts from employees that she would not sign it. Richard said, "I understand. I just wanted her to see it".

She took one look at the photo, tears welled up in her eyes and she said, "This is one of my gentlemen from Viet Nam and I most certainly will sign his photo. I know what these men did for their country and I always have time for "my gentlemen". With that, she pulled Richard across the table and planted a big kiss on him. She then made quite a "to do" about the bravery of the young men she met over the years, how much she admired them, and how much she appreciated them. There weren't too many dry eyes among those close enough to hear.

She then posed for pictures and acted as if he was the only one there.

Later at dinner, Richard was very quiet. When I asked if he'd like to talk about it, my big strong husband broke down in tears. "That's the first time anyone ever thanked me for my time in the Army", he said.

Richard, like many others, came home to people who spit on him and shouted ugly things at him. That night was a turning point for him. He walked a little straighter and, for the first time in years, was proud to have been a Vet. I'll never forget Ann Margret for her graciousness and how much that small act of kindness meant to my husband.

I now make it a point to say 'Thank You' to every person I come across who served in our Armed Forces. Freedom does not come cheap and I am grateful for all those who have served their country. If you'd like to pass on this story, feel free to do so. Perhaps it will help others to become aware of how important it is to acknowledge the contribution our service people make.

I hope this makes it's way to Jane Fonda!

God Bless Our Armed Forces!

That was a great post Rhino, but I have one more thing to say. I never had the experience of people spitting on me in airports because we usually flew our aircraft home and landed at military bases. I did however, especially while stationed in the Bay Area of San Francisco, get lots of stereotypical comments about my "haircut" and "How did I like being in the service?" I was so "weird" with my regulation Navy haircut back in the 60's and 70's, there was always someone who'd make a not-so-obvious comment and follow with their views on the war.

But I never -- not then, not now, and not ever -- doubted the righteousness of my participation in the Vietnam War effort nor my status as a career military officer.

The military is an occupation I'd go back to in a heartbeat if the "powers that be" decided they needed to use some "geezers" to fly some of their desks. I could also still navigate an aircraft anywhere in the world without GPS or any other electronic aid and if they wanted me back in the ASW saddle chasing submarines, it's all still "up there."

I'd still be proud to do whatever it took to defend the country that I love. And I'm real proud of the guys like the one in the article who "took the fire" and paid a big emotional price for us all.

Every day is Memorial Day for me -- I have lots of faces that occasionally "pass in review."

I think everyone here knows how I feel about vets and Viet Nam vets especially since I lost my brother to that war. I salute Ann Margaret. What a class act. That story made my eyes tear up. Rocket you are a tribute to our country. God bless all who served. I believe there is a special place in Heaven for you. Thanks Rhino for posting this.

Thanks for the article Rhino. I guess I was fortunate not to be spit upon when I returned in `69. However, I was not as fortunate in `62 in Iceland, spit upon numerous times in Keflavik while in uniform. I spit back!

Ann is very beautiful for a 61 yr old woman.

That pic of her has to be a good 40 yrs old.

OTOH, this photo evinces the lovely lady's seemingly ageless beauty at the time of the book release in '94.

I read about this when I was a teenager and was apalled. That Vietnam vets would be treated like that by the cowards that stayed safely behind, instead of being thanked on bended knees for fighting for the freedom that, among other things, enabled the peaceniks to treat the heroes in such a way, was totally incomprehensible to me.

And yes, Ann Margaret has more class in her little finger than the likes of Streisand et al for all their I-am-royalty attitude.

Ann looks better at 61 than Babs the Beak ever looked. Babs could get 100 face lifts and still look like the wicked witch from Oz.

Tacitus, if Babs gets 100 face lifts she's more likely to start looking like Michael Jackson than Ann-Margret.
