Enough adjectives 'bout the stupid Ruskis.

What did y'all think of the nimble chick?

Radioactive love is the purest known to man. Its typically final. You end up in a slather of goo, your bodies pressed firmly together until, like lukewarm Velveeta cheese, you both melt into each other and become one.

She's actually good-lookin', for a Russkie.

To quote T-2: "Nice bike."

Heh heh. Wyatt, I thought it. I just didn't say it.

DF,

One of the best-kept secrets in the world is the abundance of beautiful women in Russia. Redheads, blondes, brunettes, and the ones with jet-black hair, so black it has a bluish hue, set off against snow-white complexions, with sapphire blue eyes having a slightly asian lilt. Remarkable beauties.

I'm an older man, and spoken-for, married for almost 30 years. Nevertheless, the striking beauty of some of the Russian women is something I had not seen anywhere else, and was an unavoidable attention-getter.

I thought this was a Katie Curic spin off show.
This is very interesting

Westy, agreed -- to a point. Russian women can indeed be so striking that they take your breath away. You can't NOT look at such enthralling beauty.

But that's one Russian woman in a thousand. IMO the runna-the-mill slav female is coarse and plain, very much female but almost completely unfeminine. That's just my opinion.

Interesting to see internet "gonzo" jounalism. I'd like to see more of it. Interesting to know that lots of the "abandoned" zones aren't really "hot" at all.... permanent evacuation being mainly overreaction.

I worked at EPA at the time Chernobyl happened. It was in interesting time to say the least.

DF,

There's a lot of them in St. Petersburg. Of course, there are over 5,000,000 people in St. Petersburg, so the statistical base is much larger.

If you camp in that red-colored forest downwind of the Chernobyl nuke plant, you could come back with a real glow about you. Sort of like an outdoor tanning bed . . .

To her credit, the lady didn't use the pages as a platform for an anti-nuke spiel. It's a simple, unpolished documentary on the aftermath of a foolish decision by plant operators that went horribly awry.

Belisarius

If anything she's pro-nuke, otherwise she would perpetuate the myths that it is terribly dangerous.

As TW said, it was EERIE!

My congratulations to the young lady for a moving and disturbing piece.

DesertFox

I think it's award-winning quality. Somebody with some dough needs to find this gal and make a documentary, using this piece (and her, natch) as a guide.

Estragon

Great idea, Fox. It would be fascinating. An award-winner.

But as Rhino mentioned, the place has that spooky quality that would make it the ideal setting for some suspense/horror flick, too.

Her license plate was pretty weird too, KIA.

It's was quite boring to go on ellection where one could only vote for one candidate and for one party. People haven't been coming. Then, in order to bring people on ellections, authorities arranged free drinks.

True. After all, socialism is just the endless reintroduction of prior failed ideas.

Elena Filatova's web pages did a great job of showing what happened to Chernobyl and Pripyat and bringing this information to the public eye. But there are holes in her story. I believe she invented the motorcycle ride stories to make the story, and the photographs, sound much more compelling, frightening and daring than they really were. I do not believe she rode a bike through Chernobyl and Pripyat; instead, she participated in an officially-authorized tour as a tourist.

These are my reasons:

#1. The Ukraine government has allowed a tour company to set up chaperoned day trips in the zone of exclusion.

#2. It is unlikely that she was able to get special permits to ride a motorcycle solo in Chernobyl and Pripyat. She never satisfactorily explained how she did, or why the Ukraine government would give her a permission that nobody else can get. She claims that her father works in the nuclear industry, but even if true, that alone doesn't establish that she is authorized to go on solo motorcycle rides in an area sealed off by armed checkpoints.

#3. While she shows pictures of herself in motorcycle clothes and with her motorcycle helmet in Pripyat, there are no pictures of her motorcycle in that area. All the pictures of her motorcycle are taken outside the zone of exclusion.

#4. She has several mirror sites set up. Some sites discuss one solo ride, others discuss a second ride which include pictures of someone she claims is her father. On the first (solo) ride, how was she able to take some of the pictures of herself?

There is no question that she visited Chernobyl and Pripyat. Others have apparently done so, too. The value of her websites is that they provide wonderful, chilling information. But I believe she did so as a tourist, not on solo motorcycle rides.

The following internet thread has useful information on Filatova's website, and I accept some of the critiques as credible. Judge for yourself:
