Tennessee Republican Sen. Thompson to Run Again
September 24, 2001 12:33 pm EST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - Tennessee Republican Sen. Fred Thompson, who was said to have been considering retirement, announced on Monday he would run for a third term in 2002, saying he wanted to contribute after the attacks on New York and Washington.
Thompson, 59, said he had been wavering about whether to retire after his current term in office, but the Sept. 11 attacks convinced him to run for re-election.

"We will all be called on to make sacrifices," Thompson told a news conference. "This has brought out the best in America."

Thompson said he made up his mind after he saw how Americans reacted to the hijacked plane attacks on New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon near Washington.

"Other people were looking for ways to contribute and here it was right in my lap," said Thompson, who is a member of the Senate's Select Committee on Intelligence.

I'm glad Fred's running again, but sorta sad he didn't say, "The other reason I'm running again is because of that stirring email the DesertFox sent!"

This is good news. That's a guaranteed seat.

He wants to keep Al or Tipper Gore from taking his seat.

I don't think Fat Albert would lower himself to be a Senator. After tasting the trappings of the oval office and all the $$$$ he can scam, he'll make another run, if that's possible considering his weight, in `04. All of this depends upon his party willing to risk having the loser run again and making a complete fool of himself again.

Yeah, and no one's interested in bombing aspirin factories anymore. Though he didn't know it, Albert's bolt was shot before he ever pulled it back, when he was extolling "one of our greatest presidents."

Thompson succeeded Gore as TN's senior senator after Gore became VP. Gore was in his 2nd senate term, after serving (if you call what he does 'serving') 3 or 4 terms in the House, when he became VP and I doubt if he wants it back, but would take it if he could get it. After all, if the senate's good enough for Hitliary, he must surely think it's (still) good enough for him, especially if it's all he thinks he can get! LOL!

He couldn't win it if he tried. So much dirt has come out about him, even stuff local to TN, that I doubt the majority of TN voters want anything to do with him.

TN has a two-term 'pub governor right now, and, besides Thompson, TN's junior senator, (Dr.) Bill Frist, is also a 'pub.

While some southern states have been trending 'rat, TN has been trending 'pub.

Thompson is virtually assured of re-election, hands down. A vacant seat would present a better opportunity for a 'rat victory, however.

With that decision, and Rudy's pending decision to possibly extend his mayoral office (to be in position to run for gov. or eventually against Schumer?), I get the tiny inkling that 'pub incumbents and strong hopefuls are rallying to keep and gain 'pub control of as many elective offices as possible as an extra effort to help Dubya keep the House and get control back of the senate, as well as maintain favorable public opinion, in view of the decisions and votes congress will make concerning the war.

If only Senator Gramm of TX would change his mind, too. His incumbency would definitely help get the TX 'pub vote out, too, which would help with the TX House seats.

Dubya's gonna need all the help he can get, obviously.

Just my opinion.
