— WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Rep. Virgil Goode, a former conservative Democrat turned independent, formally announced on Thursday he will switch party affiliation on Aug. 1 to Republican.

This means for the Dems to gain control of the House they have to win all of their current seats plus pick up 8 Republican seats. Not likely.

There is the weight of history. The party out of the Presidency always (nearly always?) gains in Congress in off-year elections.
