Why is it we have one election day for the Presidency, but different primary dates for the nominees/candidates?

I think the biggest reason we now have candidate John McCain representing the Republican Party is because all the states have a different day set aside for their Primary. What do you think? Who do you think would be the candidate, if the Primaries were held simultaneously throughout the states?

Well, let's see...

The entire slate of candidates include:
Newt Gingrich
Sam Brownback
Rudy Guiliani
Mitt Romney
Mike Huckabee
Fred Thompson
Ron Paul
John McCain
If we held all primaries on one day, say today (June 10th), I truly believe the Republican nominee would be either Newt Gingrich or Fred Thompson.

McCain would be nowhere near 3rd place, let alone be the nominee.

The problem with the primary system as it exists now is that some people get to choose from the full slate of candidates, while others get only what's left after the others have dropped out.

Also, where in the hell does New Hampshire (or even Iowa) get to say, "We get to go first!"? It's like a couple of first graders fighting over who gets to be line leader.

No way. And frankly we should have one day. All candidates should make their intentions known at a deadline date and 1 year from then we should have both the democratic and republican primaries on the same day.

Get it all done in one swoop. None of this play games with the media and people's minds for two freakin' years as we play a vicious game of count the delegates.

A year is way too long. Give them 3 months. If their message isn't out by then, then they have no message.

I put 'not sure' because I think it would depend on the date.

I meant it would depend on when the primary was held. McCain's popularity was much lower in the early stages of the primaries.

They should hold it in March of the election year. Let the top two candidates have a run-off election in July just before the Conventions. Let them have roughly 120 days to get their message out for both the run-off and the General Election.

In Following the dynamics of race back in Jan, I believe that the top two candidates probably would have been Rudy and FDT with Mitt a very close third.

Don't think so. The RINO states would not have given him a start, as they would not have had the impact. They wouldn've been 1 or 2% of the vote.

Am I wrong?

Post Another Option

I voted "not sure", but I really don't think the dates of the primaries have as much impact as McCain winning a plurality in winner-take-all states, while the conservative vote was split among other candidates. That simply has to be stopped.

I agree that the Republicans should stop allowing individual states to decide whether they have proportional or winner-take-all systems. They should force the states to use proportional systems. Federalism is fine, but not in this case.

This is an idea that I have been pushing for a long time and is long overdue... The problem is that the primary schedules, as well as the governing rules, are controlled by the parties themselves - They are not specifically a function of the government even though they are funded by the various state governments...

I don't propose that the Federal Government control the date of the Primary vote - The less the government is involved in our freedoms, the better... But I would like to see a mutual agreement between all the parties to hold ONE primary vote in the Spring, with a later date in June or July for any necessary runoff elections...

This protracted scattered primary system is exhausting and disgusting to the voters of this country... And if we had one day for all primaries to be held, we may in fact see a greater participation among voters...

As for who would have been nominated under such a system, I believe we would have definitely had a run-off, but it would have been between Romney, Giuliani, Thompson, and possibly McCain... I believe Romney would have likely been the strongest overall candidate - Not my personal choice, but that is my realistic opinion...

I like Barkle's No.s 8, 9, and 10...

However, I am disappointed in you, Barkle, that you left out Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo since they were in fact declared candidates who actually ran and participated in debates (as much as the MSM allowed them) but Newt was not...
