I'm actually pretty mixed on the issue. I do agree that the younger members, such as myself, should try to act as mature and adult as possible (which I try to do). I also agree that we should be worried about the images on this on this site. I don't see why there should be any reason to post grapic pictures of decapitated heads or a random pair of boobs. But you know, I learn to deal with it. I only get pissed when members post them without warning.
But I also believe it shouldn't FC's job to be a parent. So yes, I am on the fence on this issue.

I have a hard time detecting sarcasm on the internet. You just caught me off guard when you said "Pray tell."
My sister used to say that in a sarcastic voice all the time. For example...
"Pray tell why I shouldn't bang your head against the wall repeatedly for hanging up on my boyfriend?"

Simple fact of the matter, demanding someone provide their date of birth as proof of age is a useless measure against someone willing to lie about their birth date.

Another simple fact, it's up to a parent to know what web sites their children are visiting. I'm sorry if my "language" or "mannerisms" offend the delicate sensibilities of some, but simply put... piss on 'em. I don't give a rats ass. You don't like what I write, the solution is as simple as not reading it.

Fact #3: This forum has an "ignore" feature and a filter. The parents of any kids here should be reading the web sites their children visit and making use of some of those tools. There is also software such as "Net Nanny" and other monitoring programs that parents can use to block sites they feel are "inappropriate" for THEIR children. They're not my kids, they're not my problem.

Well, I suggest you do not take any detective courses just yet, Grasshopper.

I also don't give a flying rat's ass about the thin skin of some people. I would not even feel sorry for them in any hardball encounter with the real world.

Got to agree with Gonz and the Counselor on this one.

Come on, people. Aren't there enough rules and regulations around that protect the Terminally Sensitive (PC comes to mind; and no, I'm not talking about computers)?

Me, I'm too old a tiger to change my stripes. You don't like what I write, or how I write it? Well, that's just too effing bad. You can always skip my posts. But DON'T expect me to change to accomodate the Terminally Sensitive.

Nothing personal against you, Prez.

Nothing on this board is any worse than what kids can see on prime time cable tv. At least they get a taste of the truth with the bad stuff, unlike the msm or prime time cable shows.

I did not say anything about us censoring ourselves, I dont want that either. I do think it could be helpful to try to find a way to keep kids off here.

Wolf Counsel's interpretation -- I want to forbid people of a certain age from joining in a political board that may contain pictures of women or mangled bodies or golly who knows what, and they will be scarred for life if they see a grown woman's peepee or something.

If you don't like my interpretation, I don't like your opinion!

Give-me-a-break! You think I'm that stupid that I don't know what a curt reply of "fine" to an apology means?

"I accept your apology", will suffice, and let it go. I mean it.

May I suggest to the moderator then to please lock this asinine thread? Leave the young people alone and allow them to join instead of just lurk?

Even though the thread is now locked, I'd like to add a few comments since I didn't get to see this when it was open.

1. A minimum age is unenforceable. Although I see the merits in the argument, it just wouldn't work.

2. The filter, quite simply, doesn't work. There are numerous ways to work around it and still get the message across. That's why we have very few words in it. You can see an example of this by considering how many ways people find to express the "F" word without actually saying it outright.

3. The notion Suzie mentioned about kids acting more adult if they know there is an age limit, may have merit. I'll keep that in mind.

4. While the suggestion may not work, her motivations were good. Give her credit for that. And try not to harass in the future when similar suggestions are made.

Oh, and another comment on courtesy. The forums are meant for debates and heated discussions, not the PM system. PMs are for personal messages, not for arguments or other confrontational things. Maybe I need to edit the policy page to add that.

Reminder to self...
